Cruise ship thwarts pirates off Somalia
From combined dispatches
MIAMI -- Pirates firing rocket-propelled grenades and automatic weapons tried to hijack a U.S.-owned cruise ship yesterday off the East African coast, but the vessel carrying many American passengers escaped, its owners said.
Two boats full of pirates approached the Seabourn Spirit about 100 miles off the Somali coast and opened fire, while the heavily armed bandits tried to get onboard, said Bruce Good, spokesman for the Miami-based Seabourn Cruise Line, a subsidiary of Carnival Corp.

Rob Mazurek returns as São Paulo Underground

border="0" alt="" /> Formerly the ringmaster of the Chicago Underground Duo/Trio/Quartet, trumpet virtuoso Rob Mazurek is back with another new project, the São Paulo Underground. Why the name change? Well, these days Mazurek resides in Brazil and he's been working on a new jazz combo there with local musicians Maurício Takara (drums) and Guilherme Granado (vocals, samples). In town this past weekend as a part of the MCA's Tropicália exhibition, the São Paulo Underground will also be performing tomorrow night for a special "Empty Bottle presents" live show at Sonotheque. Doors open at 10, admission is $10, must be 21+ to enter. Takara and Granado will open with DJ sets.

On that first day when Muad'Dib rode through the streets of Arrakeen with his
family, some of the people along the way recalled the legends and the prophecy
and they ventured to shout: "Mahdi!" But their shout was more a question than a
statement, for as yet they could only hope he was the one foretold as the Lisan
al-Gaib, the Voice from the Outer World. Their attention was focused, too, on
the mother, because they had heard she was a Bene Gesserit and it was obvious
to them that she was like the other Lisan al-Gaib.

How Time Can Fly By...

Alright, so just when the 5 or 6 of you out there are about to finally give up on me, I realize I had this web page that I used to update rather frequently. While the last month hasn't contained a huge amount of drama, there are a couple of things to make note of...

I, and 3 others who attended FATLV #1 back in July, have decided to go in together and rent a house in Las Vegas. While the exact time is not certain, we have targeted somewhere between Nov. 1 and Jan. 1 to make it happen. It's actually pretty surprising that we have found VERY nice 4 bedroom homes in excess of 3,000 sqft, for as little as $1400/month. A large number of these homes are only 1 or 2 years old as well. Once the rent is divided by the 4 of us, $350-$400 is pretty damn reasonable I think to live in Vegas if you want to be there.

I haven't been doing much construction work lately, as the guy I work for has had to stay home and look after both of his parents due to illness and surgery. It had really begun to concern me financially, because I was starting to have to use more and more of my poker bankroll to cover my bills.

Today though, I got an interesting phone call. It was the TZP site owner out in Las Vegas, and apparently the newsletter I've been putting together over the past 7 weeks has went over well with the upper management for the Doyle Brunson Poker Network. He forwarded it to the other managers of various poker sites under the network with a compliment to TZP and "this is how to get ahead in the business". Pretty cool stuff...

The result of my bit of praise...A probable earlier move to Vegas. The site manager is going to help me as much as possible to clear the rest of my expenses out of the way before I leave Virginia, and has invited me to stay with them at their home until the other 3 guys are able to get their affairs in order so that they can make the move. For me, it seems like a no-brainer. I really feel that Las Vegas is where I want to be, and I have an enormous amount of motivation to contribute to Tilt Zero Poker and to help the site and community grow.

So, that being said, it's only a matter of packing some boxes, and choosing the best way to get out there. After comparing the cost of driving/staying in hotels and just flying out and shipping a few boxes UPS, I've decided to sell the car and fly. Most of my work will be done for the site anyway, and what I don't do from home, I'll do with the folks I'm going to be working with and will just tag along with them.

As infrequently as I've updated this page lately, who knows...The next time I sit down to jot a little more about my life, it may very well be from Sin City. Wish me well...

From The Heart Of Paris

Posted: Sun, 06 Nov 2005 15:52:32 GMT

Source: Rioting and violence spread to central Paris:

PARIS (AP) -- Worsening urban unrest reached central Paris for the first time early Sunday and youths set ablaze shops, businesses, schools and nearly 1,300 cars from France's Mediterranean resort towns to the German border.

Some 2,300 police poured into the Paris region to bolster security overnight while firefighters moved out around the city to douse blazing vehicles. Police reported nearly 200 arrests nationwide.

Police also found a gasoline bomb-making factory in a rundown building in Evry, a southern Paris suburb that contained 150 explosives, more than 100 bottles, gallons of fuel and hoods for hiding rioters' faces, Jean-Marie Huet, a senior Justice Ministry official, said Sunday.

Live Review: The Go! Team @ Metro 10/29/05

Posted: 2005-11-04T14:58:47Z

Source:
border="0" alt="" />
So, I thought the thing with Brits was that they like to lounge on sofas, wearing black clothing and an overall despondent demeanor that prohibits them from moving; they like drinks straight up and chain smoking and complaining about all that is beneath them, which is everything, which means that they will never, ever, write happy pop tunes about not being defeated, and about everyone being a V.I.P., and they will never, ever, wear little black skirts and fluorescent orange tops and fuzzy pink antennas while jumping around a stage, singing about rocking the microphone. And never. Never ever. Never will they giggle.

This wasn’t just a Halloween performance. This wasn’t a British band in disguise. This is how The Go! Team always is. On my way to the show I knew that I wasn’t going to be able to sit back and listen. M.C. Ninja made it her job to get everyone moving, everyone participating. Whether it was chit chatting with the crowd in that hyper British accent everyone at the Metro Saturday night was too drunk to understand, or trying to conduct a massive crowd cheer, she was not satisfied with solely owning the spotlight.

It was a whirlwind of a show, clocking in about an hour with the gang running through several tracks off its album Thunder, Lightning, Strike, and also trying out some new tunes. It’s odd that a band so eclectic in nature-mixing guitars and electronics and sampling and brass orchestrations and an ever changing soundtrack-could at the same time be a band absolutely meant to be seen live. Ian Parton is the mastermind behind this outfit and easy to miss onstage; he was everywhere and nowhere at once, humbly moving among instruments, keeping the flow going while Ninja upfront worked the crowd.

They played to the backdrop of pop art screen projection, a tactic I don’t think I’ve ever before seen utilized at the Metro. During surging pop rockers like “We Just Won’t Be Defeated” the stage was alive with all the members of the team coming together in frantic euphoria. For the soft and sweet “Hold Yr Terror Close” it cleared, leaving drummer Chi Fukami Taylor alone to lead us in a jaunty sway. The group returned for “Huddle Formation,” and with characteristic animation Ninja divided the crowd in half for a group cheer. I was on the “Team! Team-team! Team!” side. And yes, I took my duty seriously and actually shouted aloud. So did everyone. Perhaps Ninja appeals to the wounded inner cheerleader in all of us.

So maybe the Brits have moved on without we yanks realizing it. Maybe we’re behind in the times so that now it’s our music that’s drab and mechanized and pretentious. But I like to think that it’s not as simple as that, and that The Go! Team is really something special. The idea of this band is kind of annoying, and if you let them, they’ll sound like some hip hop entrepreneur trying to mix the Spice Girls and make it kitschy cool. But that’s not the ultimate effect of Parton and company. Recorded there’s sophisticated layering of dance beats and rockin’ hooks and catchy phrases and bluesy harmonica that sounds not contrived but spontaneous. On stage there’s a reigning of this impulsive sound so that anything that, for a lesser live act, could be messy and strident and just plain irritating, is actually a pleasure to listen to. And to dance to. Don’t forget the dancing.

I'm Still Alive...

Posted: 2005-08-26T14:45:06Z

Well, I wanted life in the fast lane and I'm starting to get a small taste of it. Managing a poker site newsletter takes quite a bit of time and communication with others, but I (and more importantly, our users) are pleased with the results so far. We've decided to make it a weekly newsletter, and are trying to keep it short and sweet, with maybe 1 or 2 specialized articles/interviews, and a tournament series update each issue.

Things seem to be going very well in Vegas now that homebase has been set up there. With a little luck and a LOT of hard work, it looks like I will making the cross country drive for our November trip, and just moving my things out there for good when I go. On our trip last month, I and another Chris noticed Gavin Griffin (2004 WSOP 3K PL Holdem Champ) playing at the 40/80 tables at the Wynn. We approached him and spoke very briefly of TZP, dropped him a card, and asked that he give us a call if he was interested. Well...he was! After spending some time with John in Vegas, he's decided to support TZP and wear our gear in upcoming tournaments, so that will be some great advertising for us. We are also having success with the staff at Top Pair Magazine as they're providing us with a couple of freerolls each month, and also looking to do a TZP article as soon as the October issue.

All in all, I'm staying incredibly busy, but with each day it's looking more and more like I'm getting closer to making a "dream job" happen for myself. I mean, if you love poker, what's better than being a Marketing Director for an OPR, living in Vegas promoting your site, and playing the game you love on the side??

10 weeks left until EVERYTHING changes... = )

France: The Civil War Spreads

Posted: Sat, 05 Nov 2005 17:42:32 GMT

Source: Rioting and insurrection have spread now to Normandy and Toulouse:

Marauding youths torched nearly 900 vehicles, stoned paramedics and burned a nursery school in a ninth night of violence that spread from Paris suburbs to towns around France, police said Saturday. Authorities arrested more than 250 people overnight — a sweep unprecedented since the unrest began.

For the first time, authorities used a helicopter to chase down youths armed with gasoline bombs who raced from arson attack to arson attack, national police spokesman Patrick Hamon said.

Nearly a thousand vehicles in one night! No wonder the State Department has issued a travel warning for Paris.

Inkjet Cartridge

To make sure Globe of Blogs has the most accurate weblog listings online, link checking is currently underway. The last time we did this (in March) we pulled over 2600 dead links from the database.

If you find that your weblog is no longer listed, it is most likely because you have changed your weblog location Free Blog or your weblog is no longer active. If this is the case, you are invited and encouraged to re-submit your site (use the link in the upper left corner titled "Register Your Blog").

A weblog or blog is a web-based publication consisting primarily of periodic articles (normally, but not always, in reverse chronological order). Although most early blogs were manually updated, tools to facilitate the updating and maintenance of such sites made them accessible to a much larger and less technical population. The use of some sort of browser-based software is now a typical aspect of "blogging."

Blogs range in scope from the diaries of individuals to webpages run by political campaigns, media programs, and corporations. They range in scale from the writings of one occasional author (known as a blogger), to the diabetic supply collaboration of a large community of writers. Many weblogs enable visitors to leave public comments, which can lead to a community of readers centered around the blog; others are non-interactive. The totality of weblogs or blog-related websites is often called the blogosphere. When a large amount of activity, information and opinion erupts around a particular subject or controversy in the blogosphere, it is sometimes called a blogstorm or blog swarm.

The tools for editing, organizing, and publishing weblogs are variously referred to as "content management systems," "publishing platforms," "weblog software," and simply "blogware."

What a whirlwind week the past one has been. The Las Vegas trip has proved to be more than just a "fun" experience for me. I've been granted the chance to act as the Marketing guru for Tilt Zero Poker, and I'm THRILLED to have a shot at it. I've spent the better part of the past 3 days trying to build what will hopefully be known as one of the best OPR newsletters around. We are looking to send issue #1 out tonight, and if the response is good, we'll just make some minor tweaks here and there, but have a whole new offering for the TZP community.

As far as any of you that may be interested in the newsletter, I've provided a sign up box on the right hand side of this page so that you can receive it if you wish to do so. The addresses will not be used for any other purpose, and if you don't like it or wish not to receive any more, you can conveniently un-subscribe at the bottom of the current newsletter that you have.

Other than that, I've played very little poker since Vegas, and we're quickly making preparations for FATLV2, which is scheduled for Nov. 11-13 of this year. If all goes well, FATLV2 won't be just a trip for me, but rather a MOVE. We'll see what the next 12 weeks have in store...keep your fingers crossed for me...

Much to my mild surprise, I recently learned that the 5th of November was celebrated in the US, mostly in New England, into the early 19th century. But, instead of carrying a mannequin of Fawkes to the flames, it was a likeness of the Pope that was paraded through the streets, which is apparently what was done in England in the early days of the holiday.

Live Review: Broken Social Scene @ Metro 10/28/05

Posted: 2005-11-02T20:21:01Z

Source:
border="0" alt="" />
I almost had my eyeglass repair toolkit confiscated at the door. But the head security lady stopped my accoster, saying, “This is a mellow show tonight. We’re letting almost everything in.” Mellow? Ha! I honestly don’t know what stopped me from taking that skinny, inch-long screwdriver and stabbing it into the temple of the guy standing next to me--such was my frenzy, so much was my compulsive energy driven by this show.

All right. That’s a lie. The last thing Broken Social Scene makes you want to do is assault people. Last Friday at the Metro it was more about delivering cross-country dedications from sweethearts, more about “Raise your hand if you’re in love.” Lest you groan I’ll attest that this is the one band in your lifetime that can pull off these sugary shenanigans. This isn’t a didactic group crusading for world peace. This isn’t a gang of politicians pretending to be musicians or a gang of musicians pretending to be politicians. It’s just a good ol’ fashioned rock band that isn’t afraid to be passionate. And optimistic. By god, they’re downright cheery.

The entire show was like a weekend party where friends come and go as they please, picking up an instrument on a whim and contributing for a few songs, disappearing for a while and then coming back again. If a person didn’t leave the stage he stood off to the side, saluting those playing with a raised bottle of beer, or else admiring with awe and applause.

The glorious cycle of band feeding off crowd energy and crowd feeding off band energy is what animated this show. This was Broken Social Scene’s first time playing the Metro, and the guys revealed that the event was a dream come true for them, as they knew about the club’s legendary reputation. The crowd did not disappoint, and the band’s excitement was hard to miss. This was definitely the liveliest show I’ve seen in this mopey town. At any given time there were eight or more people on stage jumping, swaying, skipping, dancing, running across the stage to play eight bars on a trumpet, then running back again to pick up a guitar.

The set lasted around two hours and the sound was solid all the way through. On tunes like “KC Accidental” and “Superconnected” the band created a luscious chaotic mass of beauty that sent the kids spastic. On the mantric “Anthems for a Seventeen Year Old Girl” singer Lisa Lobslinger, taking over for the absent Emily Haines, mellowed them with her wispy voice and baby doll demeanor. For the last half of the set Leslie Feist joined the fun and on “Almost Crimes” rocked the drums and air guitar when she wasn’t singing counterpart to a behoodied Kevin Drew, who may have been battling an illness but still sounded strong.

Broken Social Scene has restored my faith in the Metro. Anymore I hate going to shows in Wrigleyville because the band always turns out to be bigger than I realized, the crowd further removed and lazy, simply there because it’s the Metro and whoever’s playing there must be cool because the Metro is cool. On any given night it seems like half the crowd knows one song or less by the band, and it’s not due to the artists’ newness or obscurity. It’s because the Metro seems to no longer be about getting fucked by music but about trying to fuck the cute little girls in spaghetti straps or the handsome buff boys in baseball caps.

But last Friday there was an energy I haven’t experienced at the Metro in years. Broken Social Scene has only been around a few years but has already procured a loyal mass of fans whose good vibes rival any Phish cult. It was refreshing to hear for a change collective voices singing along and not an incessant, messy clatter of hundreds of apathetic conversations. Whether or not you love a band, if the group around you is going insane with passion for the music it makes the show a gazillion times better. If this passion is merited, well, then you have the epitome of live shows. I think that with Broken Social Scene, indie rock finally has a live act worthy of a devoted following of tripped-out, obsessive nomads.

skipping along smooth water, rippling reality sporadically but oblivious

The Last Day In Vegas...

Posted: 2005-08-05T05:21:47Z

Source: I thought I would get this done last night, but was really busy working with some of the guys over at TZP, so here's the story as it was told to the TZP community a couple of days ago...
__________________________________________________________

"Alright alright...I just talked with Melissa and Kaiser just got off the plane and is heading home. In the meantime though, I was with him on Sunday night and will try to reconstruct the events leading up to my drunkened blackout after I declared Sunday my Margarita Madness day!

(Beware - this could be lengthy, and estimated drink counts will be shown)

We had spent the afternoon cruising through Aladdin and stopping by Imperial Palace for a little bit of 1/2 NL and decided to head back to send Greenie off as his flight was sometime around 6-7pm. (Margaritas = 3, Coronas = 3)

After Melissa went to take Green to the airport, Kaiser and I grabbed quick showers and decided to head downtown for a bit, as neither of us had seen Binion's and the like before. 8PM or so with margarita in hand, we hopped in a cab and were on our way. As we were dropped off downtown, the first Fremont show of the night was starting, and we each grabbed a beer as the lights went down. (Margaritas = 4, Coronas = 4)

The show was pretty cool and we decided to take a stroll through Binion's to check out the poker room and the WSOP wall of fame. Man, talk about feeling like standing on sacred ground, it was truly surreal. We head back outside, and I spot the Blue Light Special of margaritas, only $4 a pop! Of course I grab one, Kaiser reloads his beer and we head into Fitzgeralds, where they were advertising the "Best Video Poker Payouts in Vegas". We each pop $20 into a machine, and before we know it, I'm up to $80, and he's up to $60. We decide to quit there and move on to something else. I needed another marg anyway, so I hit the $4 stand again and we decide to take a cab back to Treasure Island for some table games and to check out Kahunaville (the bar where I had entirely too much fun last year). (Margaritas = 6, Coronas = 4)

We hit TI around 10:30 or so and Kaiser hits the Craps table, and I go in search for the next marg. I find one for a staggering $8.50 now (we shoulda stayed at Fremont!), leave the bartender the full $10 and watch the craps action for a while. Kaiser starts slow, then hits a bit of a rush, up perhaps $140 or so, then decides to quit after a big odds bet misses, and we walk away from the table with Kaiser holding on to about a $40 profit. (Margaritas = 7, Coronas = 4)

Kahunaville - They had Dueling Pianos going on at the start of the evening as we walked into a very crowded atmosphere. We table hop maybe 3 times and finally work our way up towards the stage when a group of 4 hotties from Long Island land at the table beside us. (Talk about pot odds!) Kaiser is starting to enjoy the beer a bit more now, and I'm dangerously close to the point of no return as I've already had 2 more margs since we walked in. (Margaritas = 9, Coronas = 4)

The point where things start getting fuzzy - I seem to recall Kaiser saying something to the effect of "You NEED to SLOW DOWN!", and of course I come back with the ever popular "I'M FIIIIIIIIIINE". So he does what any normal person would, heads up to the bar for shooters! He comes back as the waitress has just dropped off our refills and to my despair he's holding Jager Bombs! Now I am not a fan of Jager in the least, but I suck it up and down it in 3 pussified swallows. Apparently that's all the liquid courage I needed, b/c as he returns from the bathroom, I'm now settled in with the 4 hotties from Long Island. (Margaritas = 10, Coronas = 4, Jager Bombs = 1)

The part where Kaiser will likely have to take over this story - I'm not really sure what happened in any sequential order after that, I know we bought the hotties a round of shots and drinks (with one each for ourselves of course). I know that some guys that had traveled with the hotties showed up and turned out to be pretty cool. I know I had at least one more marg before all was said and done. (Margaritas = 11, Coronas = 4, Jager Bombs = 1, Random Shot of Something = 1)

Blackout! - Let me first say, I'm really not proud of this, but feel I'll go ahead and put it out there for all to read, just for the humor in it. At some point after the guys showed up, I started getting REALLY REALLY sleepy and made my plea for us to go. The fact that I couldn't walk made it a bit more difficult, but Kaiser and I started to make our way back through the casino to go find a cab. One of the guys from the bar came out and told Kaiser that they had the penthouse and we were more than welcome to come up, as they had way many more girls than guys up there. Obviously Kaiser really wanted to go, but there was one problem...I was passed out on a video poker machine.

The last thing I remember is him trying to get me up off of the machine and the next thing I know is it's 10:45AM back in the hotel room and I wake up to Kaiser saying "SHIT! SHIT!" He overslept and we had to bust ass to try and make it to the airport for his 11:40AM flight.

We made it to the airport...AT 11:30AM. There was no way he was going to make it, and after checking with NWA, they told him he'd have to wait till this morning for a standby flight. Melissa and Monster came to pick him up, I said my goodbyes and spent a still drunk-ish/hungover 3 hours drinking all the water I could find while waiting for my 2:30 flight out of town.

From what I recall, Kaiser has a great continuation of this story, as he headed to Bellagio for some late night poker after dropping me off at the room. Hopefully we'll get to hear it, and sorry if any of you think this post is too long. There is just no way to properly describe what happened out there, but I thought this would be a close attempt at it. Hope you found it funny also, I sure as hell did!"
__________________________________________________________
.
So...I'm hoping I can get another good storied penned out soon, but that should give sufficient entertainment value even if there doesn't happen to be a follow-up.

French Riots, Or, It's The Economy, Stupid

Posted: Thu, 03 Nov 2005 21:08:34 GMT

Source: The following is a portion of a letter sent by a writer living in Paris to Glenn Reynolds of Instapundit. What the writer says rings true to me: the Parisian riots don't seem to be Islamist-inspired, but are more of a function of France's lousy economic policies:

There's just no damn jobs. White college grads can't get jobs, what hope do immigrants from regions with bad schools have? I think this is more like the LA Rodney King riots -- there's people there who want the French dream, just as in LA people wanted the American dream, but they just don't see it when they look around, and they resent the fact enormously. They can't change schools to get a better education because the government says you have to go to the school where you live, and they live where they do because of the zoning laws... which I'm no expert about, but I do know that the government owns 30 percent of all housing in France, and poor immigrants basically live where they're told. The government tries to give them everything and does it extremely badly, there's no upward mobility, and it doesn't breed a happy community. Religion exacerbates the feeling of exclusion, I'm sure, but the rioting seems mostly driven by economics and bad social policy.

You can read the rest, here.

This doesn't mean that the situation can't radicalize, nor that Wahhabi imams won't try to take advantage of this, but it seems to me France is reaping the bitter fruit of 50 years of statist economics. It doesn't justify violence, but I think it helps give a better perspective on events.

Update: The Brussels Journal has more.

The annual meeting of the "You Have To Listen To Experience" Club is now in
session. Our Achievement Awards this year are in the fields of publishing,
advertising and industry. For best consistent contribution in the field of
publishing our award goes to editor, R.L.K., [...] for his unrivalled alle-
giance without variation to the statement: "Personally I'd love to do it,
we'd ALL love to do it. But we're not going to do it. It's not the kind of
book our house knows how to handle." Our superior performance award in the
field of advertising goes to media executive, E.L.M., [...] for the continu-
ally creative use of the old favorite: "I think what you've got here could be
very exciting. Why not give it one more try based on the approach I've out-
lined and see if you can come up with something fresh." Our final award for
courageous holding action in the field of industry goes to supervisor, R.S.,
[...] for her unyielding grip on "I don't care if they fire me, I've been
arguing for a new approach for YEARS but are we SURE that this is the right
time--" I would like to conclude this meeting with a verse written specially
for our prospectus by our founding president fifty years ago -- and now, as
then, fully expressive of the emotion most close to all our hearts --
Treat freshness as a youthful quirk,
mo And dare not stray to ideas new,
For if t'were tried they might e'en work
And for a living what woulds't we do?

The Biggest News in Poker

Before it went public, PartyGaming put an initial value PartyPoker on the company of around $8.5 billion. It was going to sell only 20 percent of its stock in the initial public offering. The company handling the float (Dresdner, Kleinwort, & Wasserstein) had the option to sell another 3 percent of the shares if the initial order was met, and that’s what happened. You are allowed to purchase up to a three-month supply of prescription drugs in Mexico for your personal use provided it is not a controlled substance hgh . Technically you need a prescription from an American or Mexican doctor. Most pharmacies in Mexico will get you the prescription for $10 to $20. You just tell them your name and they make a phone call and about 10 minutes later someone brings the prescription.

As you pass the first revolving gate to cross the border, stay to the right and you'll pass through the second revolving gate in about 100 yards. Adding To The RPG Collection

Posted: Fri, 21 Oct 2005 05:19:53 GMT

Source: For a while now, I've been looking for a good game to introduce new players to roleplaying, something fast-playing and easy to learn, yet with a range of options. For a long time, my game of choice was the D&D; Cyclopedia, the compilation of the old Basic to Immortal series. Though not my favorite RPG, it was fun and fit the bill. Trouble is, I only have one copy, and used copies are harder and harder to find easily. (Of course, I haven't looked in a while, and PDFs don't count.)

For a while I used Big Eyes, Small Mouth, but the need to either pre-generate characters or take newbies through even a relatively simple point-build system was more than I wanted to deal with. Plus, the company's troubles don't leave me much hope for its future availability.

Enter Troll Lord Games' Castles and Crusades. From what I've heard from [info]mind_of_richard and [info]pwca, it sounds as if C&C; stands in the same relationship to D&D; 3.5 that the old "Basic D&D;" that culminated in the Cyclopedia had with AD&D; 1E and 2E: a simpler, "pick up and play" version. I don't know much more about the game, though most of the reviews seem favorable. And, of course, it's in print and easily available. It's a little disheartening to me, however, that it has at least four pages of errata; Troll Lord has, in my mind, a terrible reputation for poor proofreading.

However, I ordered the C&C; Player's Handbook and Monsters and Treasures book. I doubt I'll need any setting or adventure supplements -- I still have my collection of old D&D; modules, bought when they were new! And, so I've heard, conversion is easy.

Fingers crossed that I'm not soon pulling my hair out over lose/loose or its/it's errors.

DJ Who??

Posted: 2005-10-24T19:48:32Z

Source: src="http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/3199/502/320/djmel.jpg" border="0" />
I didn't stick around long enough at Sonotheque last Thursday for the Biz Markie performance, but I did discover this great DJ who was the opener. He goes by "DJ Mel" and is apparently the hip-hop buyer for Waterloo Records in Austin, TX, which is an amazing store on par with the Amoeba stores in California.

I wasn't able to find much else about DJ Mel and he seems to be a relative unknown outside of Texas...but damn, this Lone Star can spin! After a solid 20 minutes of cutting some of the best new hip-hop jams, he started dropping in some sick 80s samples. He mashed-up Men Without Hats with 50 cent, Ying Yang Twins with Janet Jackson and even dug deep in the crates to scratch up some Nu Shooz. Yes, that's right, I said Nu Shooz...the one-hit wonder band who struck synth-pop/dance gold with "I Can't Wait." DJ Mel even managed to make Hall & Oates sound cool. I was at the bar ordering a drink when he played "I Can't Go For That," and everyone around me went crazy.

I'm sure Biz was great as well, but what Mel put together was an ideal set for me. Mostly new, mostly hip-hop but with a dash of 80's blended in to keep things unpredictable and interesting. It's a formula that I've always advocated, but Mel nailed it down as good as anyone I've heard.

Style Over Substance?

Posted: Thu, 20 Oct 2005 15:17:31 GMT

Source: I thought it was distasteful, years ago, when they allowed lawyers to advertise on television. Now, to fight falling membership numbers, mainline Protestant denominations in the US are airing commercials to attract members: Protestant groups put their faith in advertising:

Mainline Protestant denominations, whose numbers have plummeted in recent decades, are resorting to catchy ad campaigns and creating a brand identity to establish themselves in the public consciousness.

They even have catchy slogans:

"Because Having Questions is not a Sin."

I'm having a hard time imagining a brand managers meeting for the Lutheran Church -- Missouri Synod: "Okay, Rev. Phelps. First thing we have to figure out is what market segment are you aiming at. 18-25? Over 30s? Oh, and that plain cross has got to go. How about one with more of a 'swoosh' look, to grab the Nike crowd?"

Weird.

New Releases Tuesday (10/18)

Animal Collective - Feels (Fat Cat)
Amazon.com sez: Feels is the band's seventh album to date - their sophomore effort for Fat Cat - and sees them again kicking off from their previous release to explore another different direction. Where Sung Tongs was largely acoustic-based and the product of just two members of the Collective (Avey Tare and Panda), Feels is in contrast a full group effort (also including Geologist and Deakin). Moving further away from the suggestion of folkish affinities; it is electrified, rhythmically more urgent, and overall a considerable denser work.

Boards of Canada - The Campfire Headphase (Warp)
Damn! It's already been 3 years since Geogaddi was released? I still crank up that record on a fairly regular basis like I just bought it a few months ago. ("1969" sill kicks my ass!) When you make albums as good as these guys, 3 years in-between records goes by quick.

John Cale - Black Acetate (Astralwerks)
New solo record from legendary producer and Velvet Underground alumnus. The Beeb sez: Like a cross-section of his whole career layered with the funkiest contemporary electronica, Black Acetate is, in turns, startling, edgy, doomy and filled with rock 'n' roll thrills that really do hark back to his best work on Island records (Sold Motel, Turn The Lights On)...
What's most amazing is the fact that both his voice and his muse seem to be in tip top form. As he says on ''Brotherman'': 'I've got reams of this shit.'

Depeche Mode - Playing the Angel (Mute)
Thanks to the help of producer Mark Bell (of LFO and Bjork fame), I thought Mode's 2001 Exciter release amazingly kept the band sounding fresh and musically relevant some 20 years into their career. Unfortunately Bell isn't back this time around and my initial thoughts are that this may be a step back for Depeche Mode... sort of like how The Cure unsuccessfully tried to recapture their Disintegration glory days with Bloodflowers. Even the cover art is derivative of vintage 80's Mode. That being said, I do really like the lead single, "Precious."

Lightning Bolt - Hypermagic Mountain (Load)
Silver Jews - Tanglewood Numbers (Drag City)

Splurging

Posted: Wed, 05 Oct 2005 22:04:20 GMT

Source: Recently I recovered a portion of the money owed me by a games publisher. After paying off a loan at my credit union, I decided it was time to splurge on something fun. (Sounds gross or kinky, depending on the point of view. --ed. Pervert.) At first, I was leaning toward a digital camera, but I decided I need to do a bit more research to find the one I'd be happy with.

So, instead, I bought this. I've long wanted a real dutch oven* for stews and braising, and Le Creuset's are considered a standard. Besides, the price was almost impossible to beat, and, now that it's autumn, it's a great time for pot roast and coq au vin.

It should arrive some time next week. Yum!

*(Yeah, so Le Creuset calls it a "French Oven." I'm still ticked at France, so it's a "dutch oven" to me. :P )

Posted: 2005-10-11T16:44:47Z

Source: Adult. - Gimmie Trouble (Thrill Jockey)
Full-length Thrill Jockey debut for the Detroit electro duo...er, make that trio. Samuel Consiglio, aka "Tamion 12 Inch," has now become an official third member of the band.

Dangerdoom - The Mask and the Mouse (Epitaph)
Yes, it's finally here...the long-awaited collaboration between MF Doom and Dangermouse is now yours for the taking. Features guest appearances by Ghostface, Cee-Lo and Talib Kweli...and, of course, plenty of hijinks from the Adult Swim cast.

Gang of Four - Return the Gift (V2)
Seems like I've been hearing about this release forever as well...essentially a "greatest hits" except that the band went back in the studio and rerecorded new versions of their classics.

Tom Verlaine - Warm & Cool (Thrill Jockey)
Re-issue of a 1992 instrumental effort from the ex-Television guitarist. Be on the lookout for another Television reunion in the near future.

Paul Weller - As Is Now (Yep Roc)
Long live the Modfather! By most accounts, this is his strongest solo outing in years.

ALSO...

Lymph nodes harbor information on whether breast cancer will recur

Posted: Tue, 06 Sep 2005 17:00:00 GMT

Source: Breast cancer often spreads through the lymph nodes in the arm pits (so-called axillary lymph nodes), and whether these lymph nodes are tumor-free or contain small metastases is an important factor in the decision of how aggressively to treat a patient. Peter Lee and colleagues (from Stanford University) now report in the open access journal PLoS Medicine that looking at the immune status of lymph nodes might teach us even more about a specific breast tumor... click link for more info.

Source: I've just finished watching "assignment four" of Sapphire and Steel, the adventure involving a creature that invades our reality through photographs -- all photos that have ever been taken. This was the best I've seen yet. A good, eerie story that would make for a great Chill or Call of Cthulhu adventure.

It's too bad this show was canceled -- it's so much better than the usual police or medical drama.

Live Review: Arcade Fire@The Riviera 9/28/05

Posted: 2005-10-03T03:49:38Z

Source:
alt="" border="0" /> Never Shout Arcade Fire
by
Robyn Detterline

Wednesday night at the Riviera Theatre, your voice would have been lost in the cacophonous chorus of all the other hoots and hollers from all the other gazillion people who love this band as much as you do. The Arcade Fire may be too big for indie rock's good. In a year they've gone from Arcade-sumunuh-who? to selling out the 2500-person capacity Riv. After openers Wolf Parade finished their set the dude behind me asked his friend, "Are you ready for The Fire, man?"

That’s right. They’re already "The Fire." They're selling thousands and thousands of CD's in every record store in North America. They've taken over Sigur Ros' spot as every celebrity's token favorite cool rock band. They're pun-tastically hot.

The Riv was wall-to-wall with a diverse crowd of folks that could have just as easily been waiting for Mclusky or Tori Amos. At five till nine The Arcade Fire picked up their guitars and violins and French horns and took the stage, opening with "Wake Up," a needless command as the mantric "ohs" from the audience all but smothered the band's own chorale. Their underground buzz manifested itself as an explosion of neurotic devotion as every gray-haired man and every pixie girl belted along every word of every song, and I could just picture them listening to Funeral every day for the past year, manically carving "purify the colors, purify my mind," into their flesh.

Vocalist Win Butler led the brigade through their set of popular tunes, throwing in Dylan and Bowie covers, and some gems from their (as obscure as any Arcade Fire product can still be) eponymous debut, including "I'm Sleeping in a Submarine" and "Headlights Look Like Diamonds." The guys and gals on stage threw in cheesy theatrics, like biting and mock fighting, and in weird moment of compulsion Richard Reed Parry was wrapped in the cords from his bandmate's neo-Revolutionary jacket. In between acts the gang was free to lounge in the onstage funeral parlor-esque sofas; however, the energy was so severe there was little need to do so.

The Arcade Fire capered through most of Funeral, an inevitable set as the band’s repertoire is still limited. Butler seemed apologetic for this lack of variety, musing that the they’ve been in Chicago four or five times, and they aren’t coming back again until they have "one million" new songs. Our laughter was tinged with fear because this band is so strong and bizarre, the promise doesn’t seem so far-fetched.

The group finished with the deceptively sweet "In the Backseat." Regine Chassagne’s voice, chilling and powerful, carried us to the song's apex; however, from there the end fizzled, with each member of the band seeming to stop at their own leisure, leaving me with the dissatisfaction of an anti-climax. I didn't know it was over until the house lights came up. In the confusion there was a dazed stumble for the exits, but soon the exodus came to a standstill. It took twenty minutes just to make it to the lobby, and I didn't understand why until I found out Thursday morning that I'd missed the real encore: the group decided to trek to the vestibule and do an impromptu acoustic jam session, a fitting touch from a band incapable of stopping their own awkward romp down the path of pop rock heroism.

The 200-Year Jihad

Posted: Thu, 29 Sep 2005 03:50:58 GMT

Source: Fascinating entry in Melanie Phillips's blog:

On my travels for the past few days, I have been reading a book which tells the story of a quite astonishing part of British history of which I was previously unaware. In 'White Gold', Giles Milton records the appalling details -- gleaned,it appears, from a wealth of historical documents including diaries and letters -- of a seaborne Islamic jihad against Britain which lasted for no less than two centuries.

From the early seventeenth to nineteenth centuries, thousands of British men women and children were kidnapped by Arab corsairs and sold into slavery in Morocco where they were kept in conditions of unspeakable barbarism. The astounding thing is that these British victims were not merely seized at sea where they ran the gauntlet of such pirates in places such as the Straits of Gibraltar. They were actually abducted from Britain itself.

Live Review: BRMC@Metro 9/20/05

Posted: 2005-09-28T05:42:31Z

Source:
alt="" border="0" /> To be honest, I have always been disappointed with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club's live performances. I've been a huge fan of the band since day one, but for some reason their live shows just never seemed up to par with their recorded work. The songs essentially sounded the same live, but something was missing. Not enough energy? A lack of stage presence? Not enough fuzz on the guitars?? I could never quite put my finger on it...

However, with a brand new album and a brand new sound, I was looking forward to giving BRMC another chance in winning me over with their live show. And, I'm quite happy to report, their headlining gig last week at Metro did exactly that.

Not surprisingly, BRMC started their set with all new material from Howl. Guitarist Peter Hayes came out first and performed two songs solo Bob Dylan-style with guitar and harmonica. Once the rest of the band came out, (bassist Robert Turner, drummer Nick Jago and an additional touring guitarist), they plowed through at least three or four additional songs from the new album with Hayes still leading the action on guitars and vocals. Fellow vocalist Turner seemed rather quiet throughout this first part of the set and I was beginning to wonder if Hayes
had taken over the reins of BRMC after all of the band's recent tribulations (botched record deal, Jago briefly left the band, etc.).

While it seems that Hayes is probably responsible for the more gospel-tinged tracks from the new record, I was a bit premature in thinking that Turner had taken a step back in his role as co-leader of BRMC. As much as Hayes seemed to dominate the first half the set, the rest of the night it was the Robert Turner show, with the bassist taking the lead on classics like "Spread Your Love" and "Red Eyes and Tears" as well as the rest of the tracks from Howl. As an alumnus of The Brian Jonestown Massacre and as someone who strikes more than a passing resemblance to Syd Barrett at times, I think I've always been a bit partial to Hayes in my fandom for the BRMC. However, I'd have to say that Turner is a much stronger vocalist live and, much to my surprise, is the one that is responsible for the vocals on my favorite track from the new record, "Sympathetic Noose."

I had another BRMC revelation once the band finally tore into some their older material. I thought the new songs were sounding great and overall thought the band had never sounded better. Then, "Love Burns" started and I remembered why I had been disappointed with them before. Still probably my favorite BRMC jam of all-time, it just didn't have that same exhilarating punch live (especially when the chorus kicks in) as it does when it's crankin' out of the Alpine. It was then that I had the epiphany...hello, it's the lack of overdubs!!

Part of what makes BRMC great is their liberal borrowing of My Bloody Valentine and the Jesus and Mary Chain's patented multi-layered fuzzed out guitar attack. With only one guitar and one bass on stage, the sound just isn't going to be the same. It seems like a few more fuzz pedals wired together could remedy this a bit, but they still probably need two guitarists plugged into amps that go '11' to truly recreate on stage that great sound they had on their debut record.

On Howl, of course, they don't have to worry about this problem, because it's a stark record that's almost entirely acoustic. It's much easier to replicate the sounds of this record on stage, and thus, I finally enjoyed BRMC in a live setting. Maybe it was a little residual enjoyment from hearing the new material, but (with the exception of "Love Burns") I thought they sounded a lot better on their older rockers as well. Overall, they just seemed a lot more loose and energetic than I remember them before. (like they almost enjoying themselves up there!?!) Perhaps they're getting better with age? Maybe they've come to terms with being performers in addition to being musicians? Or maybe they've been refreshed by new material, a new record label and a new direction for the band?? Whatever the case, I'm thrilled and hope this is an indication of things to come from BRMC.

Source: Stellastarr* - Harmonies for the Haunted (RCA)
Currently on tour to support this sophomore release, these Brooklyn rockers with the curious asterisk at the end of their name are playing Metro tonight with openers Magneta Lane and The Changes. Jay Belin from LooseRecord.com writes, "Expect the same, layered vocal harmonies and grandiose punch of the dueling guitars from the first record, but with a more cohesive pensive nature that takes listeners on an emotional rollercoaster. Get there early for hometown (and Loose!) favorites - The Changes. "

9/11: Mossad Did It

Posted: Sat, 17 Sep 2005 19:17:30 GMT

Source: At least, according to Iranian TV. In a documentary shown on Sahar 1 TV, the narrator argues that the attacks on the World Trade Center were orchestrated by Israel's intelligence service:

Iranian TV: The Mossad Was Involved in the 9/11 Attacks; Jews Did Not Show Up for Work
The following are excerpts from an Iranian TV documentary, which aired on Sahar 1 TV on September 11, 2005.

Narrator: The initial reports talked about 6,729 fatalities. Soon, the number dropped to 3,000, and ultimately, somehow, it reached 2,800. After the incident, the Jerusalem Post published an article with the names of 4,000 Jews who had worked in the two towers and were missing. Later it turned out that only 130 Jews had been in the two towers and were killed. The absence of a large number of Jews on the day of the attack is one piece of evidence for the possibility that the Mossad was involved in the attacks. Furthermore, the technical complexity of this operation, the way it was carried out, as well as the possibility of obtaining secret and classified information in the US and the Zionist entity's record of attacking its own people in order to benefit on various levels, as well as the secret, deep-rooted competition between the Zionist entity and the US...

The Washington Times published a 68 page report about this, one day before the attacks of 9/11, which is one of the reasons to suspect Zionist involvement.

Disaster Relief In The US

Posted: Wed, 14 Sep 2005 17:51:58 GMT

Source: Austin Bay today quotes extensively from Colonel Bill Gross, a retired Reserve officer with extensive experience in disaster relief and recovery, about how our response plans are organized, in contrast to the top-down, dirigiste model common in Europe and elsewhere:

Handling disasters in the United States is viewed by all involved as a local response initially. Local governments will make it clear that it is their job to deal with local disasters; state governments will make it clear it is their disasters in their states. Even the Federal government look upon disasters as an initially a local problem in their planning, for this is what the governor’s had told them they want. Even in those situations where local government will become over whelmed, the basic assumption of planning is that local governments will be on their own form 12 to 48 hours.

The Federal Response Plan (FRP) provides the Federal Government its marching orders in response to a major disaster. The whole system is predicated upon local government acting first. If locals can’t handle it, they turn to their state government, and if the state is overwhelmed the state can ask the Feds for help. Not only is this how the plan was established, but state and local governments are very jealous of their role and don’t want the Feds doing anything till asked. Those really interested can go back and review events in Florida involving Andrew. (The evening before Andrew hit, the Duty Officer in US Army Forces Command in Atlanta called the Florida EOC and asked if they saw a need for help. The answer he got was, “no we can handle it.” That stood till the Miami response fell apart and a local official then started screaming for help.)

FEMA can only preposition so much but they can’t drive a thing until asked by the Governor of one of the several states. That is, unless, the President was to take the exceptional step of invoking the Insurrection Act in an area threatened by a disaster and taking over all control.

Initially the responsibility for initial response to Katrina belongs to New Orleans and Louisiana. They wanted it, as does almost every state in the Union. They only want the Feds to show up when called. Is it time to review these provisions of the FRP? Could be, but today it’s being run as per established protocols.

This does make sense if you look at it rationally. The local government is the one that knows the jurisdiction best. The population, it’s make up and needs, the lay of the land. Further, since the local government is the one with actual “eyes on” the event they should have the best information available as to the actual status and actual needs. That’s what drives the system. The guy at the lowest levels looks at the situation and says I need help doing “X.” He/she doesn’t need to know where that help is or what form it may take. He only needs to state a need. The State will attempt to fill it, if it can’t be filled by the State it will get passed to the Federal level.

Read the rest here.

I still maintain that, whatever the failures of the Fed in this situation, a rational analysis of the situation shows that the incompetent responses of the Blanco and Nagin administrations made the problem far worse than it had to have been.

Modfather on MBE

Source: src="http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/3199/502/320/paulweller1.jpg" border="0" />Paul Weller, the legendary leader of The Jam and The Style Council will be performing a live session today on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic. Weller will be promoting his latest album, As Is Now (in stores 10/11), and his upcoming brief North American tour which brings him to the Vic next Tuesday (9/20). Amazingly, over 25 years after The Jam first hit the scene, Weller is still a viable artist and an outstanding live act. His last show at the Vic a couple of years ago absolutely blew me away. I think Jim DeRogatis of the Sun-Times even listed it as his top live show of the year at the time. If you've been debating about whether to get tickets to see Weller, trust me, go get them now...you won't be disappointed. And if you still need convincing, be sure to check out his set today on KCRW.

Paul Weller's MBE performance will be streamed live via video here on KCRW's website starting at 1:20p Chicago time. Don't worry if you miss the set, KCRW archives both audio and video streams of all of its live performances. Speaking of which, you can also check previews of many other upcoming Chicago shows in KCRW's archives, including Sufjan Stevens, New Pornographers, VHS or Beta and Michael Penn.

A New Opportunity...

BRCA1 tumor suppression nullified by cyclin D1 at the estrogen receptor

About five to 10 percent of breast cancer cases are linked to genetic miscues, about half of which are linked to BRCA1... click link for more info.

'Worst thing I've ever seen'
St. Rita's Nursing Home didn't evacuate
12:17 PM CDT on Thursday, September 8, 2005

By KAREN BROOKS / The Dallas Morning News

CHALMETTE, La. – When St. Bernard Parish officials realized last week that St. Rita's Nursing Home had not evacuated as Hurricane Katrina bore down on the parish, they called to ask why. Their offer to send buses to help was turned down, they said Wednesday.

No one knows for sure why officials of St. Rita's, a privately owned nursing home, chose not to evacuate. On Wednesday, officials were still unsure of the number of people who died there, but previous estimates put the toll at 30 or more.

"This is the worst thing I've ever seen, and I drug bodies to the levee after Hurricane Betsy," said 60-year-old Raymond Couture, one of the rescuers searching St. Rita's this week.

Adventures in Modern Music...and Film

Posted: 2005-09-08T17:58:13Z

Source:
alt="" border="0" /> While the main attraction of The Wire's annual Adventures in Modern Music festival is undoubtedly the 5-day stretch of great underground music at The Empty Bottle, the event also boasts some amazing film screenings at the Siskel Film Center throughout the entire month of September. The film series began Sunday night with the Chicago premiere of Kill Your Idols, with a repeat screening tonight at 8:15pm.

New York’s art-punk and No Wave scene was explosive and short-lived. Imagine a musical movement reacting against the “conservatism” of The Ramones, The Heartbreakers, Patti Smith, and Television. “We weren’t trying to make music, we were trying to be monsters,” remarks Teenage Jesus and The Jerks’ bassist Jim Sclavunos. Made for under $300 in the spirit of the music it illuminates, this ultra low budget film takes us from the early days of Lydia Lunch, Suicide, Glenn Branca, and DNA to a newer generation owing a debt to that raucous musical moment: Sonic Youth, the Liars, Black Dice, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and A.R.E. Weapons.

For the complete schedule of screenings, go the Empty Bottle's Web site or click on the "music movies" tab on the Siskel Film Center site. The live music adventures start at The Bottle on Wednesday, the 21st.

Richard Hawley - Coles Corner (Mute)
Pulp touring guitarist, veteran session man and former Longpigs member releases his fourth solo disc. The London Telegraph sez: This is classic-sounding stuff. "Darlin' Wait For Me" is a delicate, wee hours lament that explains why Hawley has been compared to Roy Orbison many a time. He stands shoulder to shoulder, and soul to tortured soul, with Scott Walker on The Ocean...Named after a long-demolished meeting place for generations of Sheffield courting couples, Cole's Corner is an album full of romance, poetry, heartache and memory. A wonderful, beautiful achievement.

Well the day is just about here and it's about friggin time. Planned wayyy back in January, Fear and Tilting In Las Vegas #1 is just a few hours away for me.

Will I win? Will I lose??? I absolutely do not care, because it's going to be an awesome time with some great people I've come to know over the past year. It's going to be about 25 of us in all, with two private tournaments scheduled for Friday and Saturday, at Luxor and Excalibur respectively. Other than that, I anticipate a lot of poker, a lot of clubbing, and an ungodly amount of alcohol consumption.

So...grab a beer, hang on to your nipples, and wish me well...

The Logistics Of Disaster Relief

2. The United States military can wipe out the Taliban and the Iraqi Republican Guard far more swiftly than they can bring 3 million Swanson dinners to an underwater city through an area the size of Great Britain which has no power, no working ports or airports, and a devastated and impassable road network.
3. You cannot speed recovery and relief efforts up by prepositioning assets since the assets are endangered by the very storm which destroyed the region.
4. We do not yet have teleporter nor replicator technology like you saw on "Star Trek" in college between hookah hits and waiting to pick up your worthless communications degree while the grownups actually engaged in the recovery effort today were studying engineering.
5. Getting people out of the stricken areas is the most pressing concern, since we cannot get enough supplies into it to safely sustain them.
6. Getting the airport, bridges, and roads repaired is the next priority, since the supplies and people needed to fix levees, drain the city, and repair the infrastructure cannot be transported via aircraft. You need to truck them in.

Kanye does Chicago proud once more

If you missed it this weekend, Crooks and Liars has the video clip of Kanye West's teleprompter-defying speech at the live Concert for Hurricane relief.

"I hate the way they portray us in the media. If you see a black family it says they are looting if you see a white family it says they are looking for food...George Bush doesn't care about black people."

Apparently, NBC wasn't too pleased with Kanye's improv, Crooks and Liars reports that his remarks were edited out of the West Coast feed of the broadcast.

Weekend Music Outlook

Posted: 2005-09-02T20:31:56Z

Source:
I don't know about you, but I can't stop watching the Hurricane Katrina coverage on TV and the Internet. The destruction of an entire city is mind-blowing, but the continued chaos and seemingly nonchalant response from our so-called leaders is just dumbfounding. However, at some point you've just got to turn off the TV, go out and enjoy the fact that we live in a city that is almost 600 feet above sea level and well-removed from any sort of insane tropical weather phenomenons.

With that in mind, here's some recommendations on where to go out this extended weekend...the live rock scene is naturally a bit slower due to the holiday, but for some reason, there are a lot of great events for those who like electronic music and/or like to dance. Here's a quick run-down:

Tonight (9/2)

WLUW and WNUR electronic gurus Chris Widman and Dave Siska join forces again at Sonotheque...this time presenting Berlin-based electronic producer Monolake along with Chicago's very own Kate Simko. Show starts at 9pm, cover is the usual $10.

Saturday (9/3)

Saturday night at SmartBar, Meiotic Promotions presents French electronica artist The Hacker, best known for his work with electro diva Miss Kittin. The Meiotic Soundsystem DJs open, show starts at 10p, admission is $10...and, of course, SmartBar is always open 'til 5a on Saturdays.

Sunday (9/4)

You won't find a better dance party than at a taping of the legendary cable access music show Chic-A-Go-Go , and this weekend they'll be taping their annual Halloween episode. If you've ever wanted to come down and shake your ass with Ratso and Miss Mia, this is the weekend to do it...the Halloween episode is a fan favorite (who doesn't love doing the 'L' train to the theme from Ghostbusters???) and the crew always pulls out all the stops. Plus, this year they've managed to snag local indie-rock phenoms The Ponys as the headlining musical act. Trust me, you don't want to miss this one...

The festivities begin at noon at the CAN-TV studios, 322 S. Green St. Go to www.roctober.com for directions and more info on how to participate. As always, this is a free all-ages event.

Monday (9/5)

If you're not wore out from the long weekend, there's still more great DJs and dancing to be had on Monday night! John Herndon, of Tortoise fame, will be spinning at Danny's (1951 W. Dickens Ave) and over at the revamped Lava Lounge (859 N. Damen), they're featuring a full night of DJs spinning music from the UK's grime scene.

(And of course, RFC will keep you posted on any upcoming Hurricane Relief shows organized locally...nationwide charities helping the cause can be found here .)

Meiotic Celebrates 3 Year Anniversary at Sound-Bar

Posted: 2005-08-25T16:52:13Z

Source:
alt="" border="0" /> Friday night, local electronic music promoter Meiotic is celebrating its 3rd anniversary with a party at Sound-Bar. Headlining the night will be microhouse master Akufen and fellow glitchy techno-file John Tejada. While he's been cutting 12" records for the likes of Perlon and Force Inc. since 1999, this will actually be Akufen's live debut in Chicago. Tejada is a staple of the Plug Research label and, while based in L.A., is frequently grouped in with the Detroit techno scene.

Speaking of the 'D,' also on the bill is SV4 vs. Todd Osbourne, a tag-team performance from two artists on Ann Arbor's Ghostly International label. In fact, not only is SV4 (aka Sam Valenti) a member of the Ghostly roster, he is actually the founder and leader of the indie-electronic stalwart.

Party starts at 9pm with members of the Meiotic crew opening the night on the decks. Cover is $15 at the door, though they "highly recommend" securing tickets ahead of time. Not only will you save yourself some hastle at the door, (Sound-Bar is notorious for its long lines to get in) you'll also save yourself a few bucks in the process. However, even if there is a bit of a wait, you will get your money's worth once inside...as the party lasts to 4a.

Sound-Bar is located downtown at 226 W. Ontario, as you may have guessed, this is a 21+ show

Steven Drozd to play Sonotheque!

Posted: 2005-08-22T19:31:05Z

Source:

This weekend, I inadvertently found this advert for September's Biz 3 party at Sonotheque. On one hand, Steven from The Flaming Lips is an amazing choice. While lead singer Wayne Coyne (a genius in his own right), gets most of the attention and accolades, Drozd is the real musical genius behind The Lips. Should be real interesting to see what jams he pulls out of his DJ bag. (although The Flaming Lips' recent contribution to the Late Night Tales series probably provides a few clues). Whatever he decides to spin, Drozd is a great unexpected twist to celebrate the one year anniversary of these great DJ parties at Sonotheque.

On the other hand...who the hell is Fred Armisen?? Should I know who this guy is???

The Washington-New Delhi Axis Revisited: Target Beijing?

Posted: Tue, 19 Jul 2005 06:46:59 GMT

Source: A few months ago, I wrote about the growing alliance between India and the United States. Back then, the news had just come out that the United States had made the decision to help uplift India to the level of a world power in the 21st century. The convergence of interests shared by the two largest liberal democracies makes such an alliance a "natural," and, indeed, the United States has been working for years to improves relations with India. First under Clinton, then with growing emphasis under Bush the Younger since September 11th.

Since then, there have been other developments. On June 27th, Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld and Indian Defence Minister Mukherjee signed a ten-year pact providing for

"...high-tech cooperation, expanded economic ties, and energy cooperation. It will also step up a strategic dialogue with India to boost missile defense and other security initiatives, launch a "defense procurement and production group," and work to cooperate on military "research, development, testing and evaluation."

Missile defense and other security issues. Along with the shared threat from Islamist terrorism, both Joe at WindsOfChange.net and Wretchard at The Belmont Club take note of the elephant in the living room that neither the US nor India are willing to mention: China. As its economy grows, China is becoming more aggressive: the government is fostering a hyper-nationalism among its people, especially against Japan; it is rapidly expanding its military, particularly its navy, which is building nuclear attack subs that can only be meant to challenge the US Navy's dominance of the western Pacific; it regularly rattles sabers at Taiwan, a former province an liberal democracy the US has sworn to protect. It has even threatened a nuclear strike against the western US in the event we come to Taiwan's aid. And it is expanding its presence around the Indian Ocean, helping construct a deep-water port in Pakistan and obtaining port rights in Myanmar, the astrology-ruled military dictatorship once known as Burma. On each side of India.

But China has serious weaknesses, which Washington and New Delhi have both noted. Poor in natural resources, China's rapidly expanding economy depends on oil imported from the Gulf and Sudan (where Chinese troops guard Sudanese oil fields, while Sudanese "militia" carry out a near-genocide in Darfur). Tankers must cross the Indian Ocean, pass through the narrow Straits of Malacca (those old British Imperial choke-points!), and then find safe passage past the waiting submarines of Taiwan and Japan, which could wreak havoc with Chinese shipping in wartime. In this context, another of the reasons for the newborn Indo-American love-fest becomes clear. India is wary of its northern neighbor, with whom it has already fought a war and which is now also an economic rival. It consequently wants a powerful ally that has an interest in containing China and who will help it modernize its own military. In the meantime, the US wants a powerful regional partner who can cut the Chinese oil lifeline in an emergency. It's no coincidence that cooperation between the US and Indian navies has been increasing -- it was quite close during the Boxing Day tsunami relief efforts, for example.

One last symbol of the new "special relationship:" Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh arrived in the US for a state visit, Sunday. He was received at the White House with full honors, including a 19-gun salute. He will also address a joint session of Congress and be the guest of honor at a state dinner. This red-carpet treatment is not common at the Bush White House: there have been only four "state visits" in the last five years. Among the four prior honorees? Tony Blair.

In Beijing's Forbidden City, nervous eyes are watching

Lollapalooza- An Overview

Posted: 2005-07-25T22:14:57Z

href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/rfc/28518110/">
Anthony Gonzalez of M83

Two ridiculously hot weekends in a row of wall-to-wall music have utterly exhausted me, and I'm glad to find myself show-free for at least the next month to let myself recover. Still, the past two weekends of music have been a blast.

The stark contrast between Intonation and Lollapalooza was evident fairly immediately- walking into Grant Park, the setting for a festival was almost unbeatable, with the Chicago skyline westward and the lake to the east, Buckingham Fountain to the north, and plenty of gardens and tree-lined paths within the grounds. If Intonation was the little Indie Festival That Could, Lollapalooza showed what money and corporate sponsorship could provide, and to be honest I appreciated getting to be a part of both. Intonation's self-involved hipster crowd was replaced with a more varied group of fans to go with the generally more mainstream lineup (not that I'm complaining- I can only take so much pretension at once). Though I wouldn't have paid more than the $35 I spent on Lollapalooza tickets, credit must be given where credit is due, and Lolla was impeccably run. Lines to get in were short, the grounds were beautifully decorated, every band starting on time, and the sound was consistently great on the festivals four (corporate-sponsored) stages. [I'd like to emphasize that fact that I have no problem with corporate sponsorship if it means they are using their money for good (putting on cool music festivals) rather than evil (donating to right-wing political candidates)]. They were also very well-prepared to deal with the 100+ degree heat of Sunday, bringing in cooling buses and misting tents throughout the grounds. Hopefully this means that Grant Park will be used for many more large musical events in the near future.

I got the chance to see more music on Saturday due to the far more bearable temperatures, starting with M83 at 12:30. What I love about M83 is seeing them recreate their albums (made entirely with keyboards) on the live stage with a full band. I also love how French they are- Anthony Gonzalez never said anything other than "Merci Beaucoup" and "Thank you, this was a nice festival" at the very end. They were also one of the more unique and least-known bands to appear.

My third attempt at enjoying ...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead made me realize my problem with them is that I only like "Source Tags and Codes," and they never seem to play anything from it. They also act like a bunch of frat boys in a band, using extensive use of the word "fuck" in between songs and throwing their drum kits into the crowd at the end of the set. Breaking shit is cool! Actually, it was entertaining, but I think their creative juices may have been spent in 2002.

Billy Idol is nearing 50 and needs to put down the microphone for good. Not that he doesn't still look great- I don't think he's really aged much physically, if at all- but other than "White Wedding," "Dancing with Myself," and "Rebel Yell," he played a bunch of crap from an apparently upcoming album and made reference to the time in "'82 when he had his finger up Madonna's ass." I missed Blonde Redhead for this? Meanwhile, in the distance we watched two giant blow-up rubber duckies emerge on Primus' stage.

The Pixies continued the Longest Reunion Tour Ever by playing the hits, including "Here Comes Your Man," "Bone Machine," "Debaser," "The Lady in the Radiator Song," and an encore of "Where Is My Mind." Kim Deal is so cute, she looks like a soccer mom who drove to Lollapalooza in her keyless-entry minivan, when you know she's probably done a shit-ton of drugs.

Finally, Weezer closed out the night with the biggest crowd and the trademark giant W on stage. I only wanted to hear songs from the Blue album and Pinkerton, because everything since has been pretty lame. Somehow, Rivers Cuomo heard my cries and essentially split the set into two parts- Part 1: songs the old fans like, and Part 2: songs the new fans like. So in the first 20 minutes or so, we were treated to "Why Bother," Say It Ain't So," "No One Else," "El Scorcho," "Undone (The Sweater Song)," and more. Then I was able to tune out until they ended with "Buddy Holly" and "Surf Wax America" for the encore, making this set a very pleasant surprise.

Day Two was somewhat condensed due to my desire not to die in the heat, and the pictures sort of reflect my inability to hold a camera steady, but I trudged on. I heard Dinosaur Jr. from the shade of the porta-pottys, recognizing only a cover of the Cure's "Just Like Heaven." We left for air-conditioning as we passed Tegan and Sara, who we later learned cut their set short when Sara ran off the stage to vomit. The Arcade Fire wowed the crowd as expected with their energetic live show, which they managed to pull off while all wearing close to full suits and occasionally a motorcycle helmet or two. They left me with just enough energy to chill on the grass during Spoon as the sun finally went over the horizon and eventually set during Death Cab for Cutie, making it the fifth time I'd seen both bands.

Wish I'd seen had it not been so unforsakenly hot: The Black Keys, more of the Dandy Warhols (though I did walk by just as Anton Newcombe joined Courtney Taylor on stage for a song, a delight for anyone who'd seen the movie "Dig!"), Los Amigos Invisibles.

Check out the photoblog for another visual review of the weekend- getting good pictures was difficult in the heat, but I did what I could!

Dandy's reunite with Jonestown at Lollapalooza

Posted: 2005-07-27T15:32:29Z

Source:
(From Fri, 7/22) /> ...that would be perfect timing for the Dandy's to casually stroll on over to the Dark Room after their Lolla gig to come check out the Jonestown who will probably be starting their set around 10 or 11. Perhaps a spontaneous reunion or jam session might ensue??? Yeah, right...

Well, I be damned!! It actually did happen...though not at the Dark Room, but at the Dandy Warhols set Sunday night at Lollapalooza. Former Brian Jonestown Massacre guitarist Matt Hollywood and Jonestown ring leader Anton Newcombe actually joined the Warhols for a few songs during their set. It was a total riot seeing them all play up there and sure enough, there was even a bit of drama from Anton at the end. It wasn't a part of the set, but after Anton left the stage he kept bitchin' to all the security people backstage about one of the photographers, and tried to get the guy kicked out.

I actually ran into the photographer in question after the show, and apparently Anton was successful in getting him booted off the stage. What was it that provoked him?? Well, this wasn't just any photog, but it was one of the Jonestown's former managers. Anton claimed to the security people that he had a restraining order on him and eventually he was escorted off stage. I didn't prod any more about whether there really was a restraining order in effect or whether it was just complete BS, but either way it's just another classic story in the dysfunctional life of Anton Newcombe and the Brian Jonestown Massacre.

Technorati:
Dandy Warhols

Stay tuned...lots more Lollapalooza coverage and pictures to come here in the next couple of days. Any stories/pics from this weekend you'd like to share??? Send them to rfceditor(at)hotmail.com. Speaking of which, this weekend I received a great extended piece from RFC reader Robyn Detterline about her experiences last week at Intonation. Scroll down and check it out today while we sort through all our Lolla footage this afternoon.

Intonation Music Festival 2005: A Romance

Posted: 2005-07-25T05:03:22Z

Source:
By Robyn Detterline />
It was a weekend of humidity, heat, pop culture and doing nothing. At three o’clock in the afternoon on Sunday, July 17, while the sun reached its peak of ground coverage and intensity, and air temperature approached 100 degrees, masses of Chicagoans fixed tall glasses of iced tea, positioned their recliners in the direct flow of their air conditioners and relaxed while ravaging through their new copies of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. The more adventurous trekked to the beach with their copies and passed out under umbrellas; the more adventurous still ditched their books, braved the bacteria and actually went for a swim. The lazy just hopped on a cool bus and spent their afternoon in an icy theatre watching Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. With the anniversary of the deadly ‘95 heat wave in mind, people barely moved, and if they did it was in attempt to find water, shade, a chill of any kind.

But in the middle of Union Park, a parched field of dead grass and sand and maybe a dozen (or what felt like just a dozen) shade trees, stood hundreds of sweaty, pasty indie kids raising their hands to the air, convulsing and popping their bodies. A deaf person would have looked upon the seen and thought it a revival of some suicidal cult devoted to Ra. Even most of the hearing world would have thought them all insane freaks. And they probably were. But really they just loved to boogie to Out Hud.

"When it’s this hot, the only think you can do is get hotter," Nic Offer, decked in his soaked "muscle" tee, enlightened the crowd at Pitchfork’s first Intonation music festival. He played the part of our evangelist, dancing primitively, erratically, and musing about the inane presence of Teddy Grahams on the stage. What he looked out upon must have seemed like a rave ripped inside out, perhaps sans X, but not lacking in hallucination and endorphins. While the rest of Chicago was idle we jumped and flailed about under the sun, realizing that Offer knew what he was talking about: once you forget the sun, once you think it is your own body’s energy that is making you heat to such a dangerous level, you become calm, euphoric, cool.

On Saturday morning we didn’t know it would come to this state of ecstasy. Among the swarm of Green Line poseurs I could hear (and made myself) the declaration: "I want to see every band today. Fuck Lollapalooza. I can see every band today." At Ashland the trains emptied, hundreds of people stepped their flip-flops and New Balances onto the platform and into the sun that would strike and seethe and destroy the determination of the biggest of music geeks. By two o’clock the general attitude changed from optimistic exploration to resigned floating, and bands were chucked to the wayside left and right, becoming sacrifices for a fifteen minute wait for ice cream or a half hour nap in the shade.

But the same heat that made us forget intriguing acts not at the top of our pantheon could also transform our darlings into gods. You haven’t experienced Death From Above 1979 until you’ve experienced them so close to your own demise, with a body burnt and tortured by a sweltering sun and seven-hour suppression of urination and defecation. You haven’t had your ass kicked until it’s been kicked by a scantily clad Tim Harrington, kicked so easily because your flesh has been liquefied and your will annihilated. Indeed, after hours of exposure there’s nothing for it but to give up or give in; with water a buck a bottle dehydration was no excuse, and so last weekend in Union Park enough vitamin D was absorbed to last every indie kid, every punk, every hipster in Chicago well into the next decade.

No one was in her or his right mind; not Thax Douglas, Chicago poet extraordinaire who apparently has written (at least) four poems about Andrew Bird, not Tim Tutton, whose overzealous mantras of an anti-corporate, anti-commercial, Canadian-worshipping spirit did little to rally the sizzling masses. At 2:45 A.C. Newman took the stage, apparently having forgotten to tune his guitar. He strummed obliviously through "On the Table." No one wanted to say it, but we were all thinking it: Can this be? Can this indie pop icon really be a charlatan? Can he really suck? Thankfully, when the tune ended someone pointed out his folly. He tuned up; we geared up for the next song, which turned out to be "On the Table."

The Go! Team romped through their set like they were the Spice Girls and Intonation was in the United Center rather than Union Park. Only insanity could make hundreds of underground music cool cats wave their hands back and forth in the air, shouting Go! Team! Go! Team! like maniacal preps at a high school rally. At the end of the set they invited the girls and boys from the local pool onto the stage; we envied their position among the Brit charm stars and also their privilege to dip back into the pool once they’d had their fill of dancing.
As eight o’clock approached a low rumble of feet and mutterings spread across the park. Prefuse 73 rocked through their jammin’ beats and double drum drive; unfortunately much of the crowd hovering about the Holiday stage at this point were not paying attention. But can you blame them? The sun and temperature were going down; the slight relief brought with it the return of the ability to have conversations beyond, "It’s so frickin’ hot!" And also some crazy band of convicts was due to hit the stage.

Death From Above 1979 started twenty minutes late because, as vocalist/drummer Sebastian Grainger so tactfully pointed out, the fact that there are only two of them is deceiving, and the set-up time of bands great and small takes equal time and care. Heretofore the sets went back and forth between two stages, allowing for the quick succession of shows, but the odd number of artists on day one called for the doubling-up somewhere to allow Tortoise access to the main Decimal stage that night. So someone somewhere decided DFA 1979 could prepare in about ten minutes.

When they finally started thrashing, all were gutted immediately. Most of us found the sensation--one of having a fist shoved down your throat and your blood and tissue and all that hadn’t been incapacitated already from the heat removed--quite pleasurable. But others were less happy. Downright offended, I’d say. While the kids in front were lost in mosh like this was Lollapalooza a la ’94, from the back I was able to witness the mass exodus of people with scowls and perplexity and disgust plastered upon their faces. My thought: How can you not get off on this? You crazy!

But the day wasn’t all about pain and frenzy, and the late afternoon and evening brought with it the paradoxical sanity of Four Tet, Broken Social Scene and Tortoise. Four Tet a.k.a. Kieren Hebden provided a clear and calm presence despite the pulses and crashes of his sampling maelstrom; he was a dark solitary figure upon the stage mixing it with vigor and grace, summoning the academic vinyl geeks from the WLUW record fair with his cracking rhythms climaxing to tones and pitches that delivered the sickest and most dazed of the lot. Broken Social Scene beckoned the freer of spirits to kick off their shoes and twirl and put the "hippy" back in hipster. And Tortoise blanketed the night with a sheen of electronic pop beauty, playing in front of a screen that flashed motley geometric screensaver-esque images. Many took the opportunity to relish the respite that nightfall brought and collapsed onto the grass while the cool tones created an ambiance we forgot could exist. I wouldn’t have been surprised if silent fireworks had started exploding above our heads or if a thunderstorm materialized from nothing and poured upon us rain and lightning and all the wind we could savor. As it was, kids started making out, falling asleep, remembering hunger and the inconvenient need to go home. And no one could believe that just a few hours earlier we were being seared, and no one wanted to think about what wrath the furies had in store for day two.

It’s Dungen, people. Not Dunjin. The Swedes took the Decimal stage at 1:30 on Sunday, looking like the Scandinavian chapter of the Peter Frampton fan club, and sure we all knew they were Swedish, but did we all know that they sang in Swedish? It took me a couple of songs to realize it. The sun climaxed, the heat climbed at a rate such that we knew it would surpass the hell of the previous day, but we tried to deny it. Dungen threw full bottles of water into the crowd, ricocheting them off lights and the occasional fan. I was too far back to enjoy their generosity and had to ditch the set early to enjoy some time in the shade. I couldn’t be bothered with Xiu Xiu. I ate a Strawberry Chill and both cursed and delighted in the quick ticking of the seconds until Out Hud. At about 2:30 we slowly emerged from the trees and there was a collective groan at the sun. In an hour the temperature must have climbed ten degrees. It really was up to Out Hud; we needed to be convinced to stay.

Nic Offer’s Zen philosophy was unilaterally adopted; we fought through the afternoon and at 4:30 found ourselves still in Union Park, determined and contentedly exhausted. We’d reached the home stretch and discovered that we weren’t dead or even passed out; a satisfied calm overcame us as Andrew Bird stepped onto the stage. Booking Andrew Bird for an outdoor summer music fest is a little like throwing a monk into the midst of a gospel choir. It’s not offensive, but it is incongruous and disobliging; however, for some reason it worked. Even in the scorching sun the serenity of Bird’s set surpassed the tranquility of Tortoise’s twilight ramble the night before. He was small, modest, and languid; the only hectic moments came when he switched between his guitar and violin. Still his music carried powerfully across the park, and while some remained too agitated to be bothered with enjoying beautiful music, most of us listened intently, chilled by his smooth whistling that hung eerily on the air.

The earnest tone established by Andrew Bird carried through The Wrens’ performance. While we anticipated their start one could feel among the crowd an energy of reverence. Even those of us less familiar with these veterans sensed we were becoming a part of a special scene; during the set bassist Kevin Whelan revealed, "This will be the biggest day of our career." They gave us an honest, dignified, yet insane concert, highlighted by Whelan deftly and repeatedly throwing his bass into the air, and also the guest percussionists pulled from the crowd to shake maracas and bang drumsticks on the floor.

Around seven there was much internal strife brewing inside of me and I assume many others. We didn’t know whether to stay at the Decimal stage to watch the end of The Wrens’ show and stake out choice spots for The Decemberists, or to abandon our posts, make our mad dashes to the Holiday stage to be immersed in the sick spectacle that is the splendor of Les Savy Fav. Let’s just say that those who chose the latter did not regret it.

Andrew Bird and The Wrens calmed Intonation like the aloe slathering our sunburns and dusk easing our heatstroke. They prepared us for the epic folk rock pop of The Decemberists, the grand conclusion we’d been working so hard for. Leave it to Les Savy Fav to fuck up the dénouement, to thrust us back, deeper into the outrageous mayhem we thought we’d crawled out of for good. Tim Harrington strutted around the stage, removing an article of clothing it seemed during every song (except when he fashioned a hat from the roll of tin foil he was brandishing) until he was in his skivvies. Apparently he was still a little warm and for relief poured a bottle of beer down the front of his briefs. He threw wet sponges and an inflatable raft into the crowd. He wanted to teach us a dance that would most definitely result in passionate lovemaking, and preceded to convince us all to have a seat so we could watch his moves closely. We didn’t know what the hell was going on, but we knew we liked it, and so we all took a knee. Well most of us did. Those too cool remained standing and got chucked in the head with water bottle projectiles. I foresaw a riot. The cops threatened to shut down the fest if we didn‘t calm down. I didn’t think I’d make it out alive to see The Decemberists.

But I did.

About the most unoriginal, pompous thing you can do is be in a rock band. Almost as hackneyed and pretentious is headlining a summer music festival. But this is Intonation we’re talking about, and the ostentation of The Decemberists doesn’t go beyond Colin Meloy’s spectacles and odyssean lyrics. They began with "The Infanta" and moved spotlessly through songs old and new, sounding nearly as polished live as digitized, even when playing their guitars behind their heads. In a bizarrely coincidental move, we were once again beckoned to take a seat, but this time not in an effort to catch a better glimpse of the band but for the sake of taking a breather. Of all the atmospheres created by all the various bands over the course of the two days, this was the only show that felt downright fraternal, like a large crew of scouts careening by the campfire. Neither frantic nor indolent, The Decemberists played, in every sense of the word, and carried the weight of Intonation gracefully. They closed the fest with "The Mariner’s Revenge Song," a tale of survival and mania and we were invited to scream at the point in the song when the whale swallows the hero. Like veteran comrades we banded and howled and shrieked, gratefully unleashing all of the sweat and madness we had procured during the festival.

Afterwards was sheer relief. We settled back into our right minds, made the trek back to the Green Line as college students and young urban professionals and music geeks, obviously spent and already looking back with nostalgia. Intonation wasn’t perfect. There were sound problems, short sets, rough transitions between bands. There were long lines and few vegan food selections. The Clap Your Hands Say Yeah disc sold out by the end of Saturday. Not one cute little indie boy asked me for my number. It was a little warm. Yet in spite of all the pain we’d endured I heard no complaining on my way home, which left me to contemplate what the hell had been so good about what I’d just gone through. Perhaps it was just the oppressive, hallucinogenic heat that made me feel that something exceptional had happened. After all, large-scale outdoor concerts can as a rule and at best produce mediocre performances. So it must have been the heat distorting my senses that created the transcendence and satisfaction. Then again, this upcoming Sunday the temperature is supposed to top 100 degrees, and several bands I love more than anyone at Intonation are going to mutilate Grant Park. And yet I haven’t the slightest desire to go to Lollapalooza. I think I’ll create more magic by sitting in my stuffy apartment and reading my new Harry Potter book.

Lollapalooza Post-Party Guide

Source:

Of course, with all the great festival hijinks during the day, you can’t forget about all of the great post-parties at night. Here’s a run-down of some of the major post-Lolla gigs already announced. Undoubtedly, there are probably a few others I missed and quite a few more that will spontaneously sprout up over the next two days. Keep your eyes peeled during the festival and feel free to pass along any other gigs or parties in the comments section of this post.

Saturday

The Walkmen at Schubas - 11pm

Right after their 7:30pm set in Grant Park, the Walkmen will be darting up north to the corner of Belmont and Southport to rock the quaint confines of Schuba's. Unfortunately, even with the hefty $20 ticket price, this one already sold out.

M83 DJ Set at Sonotheque - 9pm

Anthony Gonzalez, one half of French synth-rockers M83 will be manning the decks of Sonotheque with DJ Jordan Zawideh. After a long, hot day in Grant Park, basking in the low-key, climate-controlled, acoustically-tuned environment of Sonotheque might just be a euphoric experience in itself, no matter who is spinning the tunes.

The Brian Jonestown Massacre at Dark Room - 9pm
Thanks to the brilliant documentary, Dig! , I am now completely obsessed with this band. The Jonestown are actually playing Saturday afternoon at Lolla, but I couldn't help but notice that Dig! co-stars(or should I say, arch rivals?) The Dandy Warhols are scheduled from 7:30-8:30pm Sunday night. Hmmm... That would be perfect timing for the Dandy's to casually stroll on over to the Dark Room after their Lolla gig to come check out the Jonestown who will probably be starting their set around 10 or 11. Perhaps a spontaneous reunion or jam session might ensue??? Yeah, right...but then again I never thought I would see Roger Waters play with Pink Floyd again, so I guess stranger things have happened.

And what's this?? Is tambourine-man Joel back in the band?? Check out the pictures from the Jonestown's recent performance at London’s Queen Elizabeth hall on www.underexposed.org.uk. If Joel is really back with the band, this really will be a post-show party.

Ex-QOTSA member plays Mother's??

alt="" border="0" /> I guess times are tough these days for ex-Queens of the Stone Age bass player Nick Oliveri. Apparently he played a gig last night at Mother's(?!?), a drunken Rush St. institution that...well, (to put it nicely) is not exactly known for featuring great music. Obviously, as a solo artist, he's not going to be able to draw a crowd even remotely close to that of a QOTSA gig, but of all the places to play in this town...Mother's??!? What's next, a gig at Excalibur? Perhaps a solo acoustic set at Bar Chicago? Sounds like someone needs to get a new booking agent! Keidra of local blog Enjoy and Exciting! has more.

More Music Fest Madness

Posted: 2005-07-20T16:57:52Z

Source:
alt="" border="0" />
So...you rocked out at both days of Intonation Fest and you've got your tickets secured for another two days of non-stop music at Lollapalooza. However, there's these pesky 5 days in-between where there is nothing going on. So what's a die-hard music fan to do???

Road Trip!!!

That's right, if two days of Intonation and another 60+ bands at this weekend's Chicagopalooza isn't enough to satiate your thirst for live music, you can take a short road trip to Indianapolis for the Midwest Music Summit. Starting tomorrow, the 21st, the MMS is a SXSW-esque music fest that boasts 400+ bands over three days. Some of the featured acts include The Ponys, Louis XIV, The Dead 60s, VHS or Beta, Longwave, The French Kicks and Hockey Night.

Sure, most a lot of these bands are playing here this weekend as well, but hey, it's an excuse for a road trip! Plus, Lollapalooza doesn't start until Saturday...so what are you going to do all day Thursday and Friday? With a quick trip to Indy, you can create you're own 4-day, non-stop music marathon.

The Intonation Music Festival- An Overview

Posted: 2005-07-18T23:44:20Z

Source:
href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/rfc/26923170/">
Broken Social Scene

It's 6:00 PM and I'm still horrendously sore from a weekend spent on my feet in 90+ degree weather, but I'm a trooper. The festival went off mostly without a hitch, minus long lines for the food, taking too long to open the gates on Saturday morning, and a few sound problems that plagued bands like Prefuse 73 (too much bass obscuring the rest of their sound) and Xiu Xiu and the Hold Steady (certain instruments clearly not amped at times during their sets). Other than that every band started on time, water was plentiful and the mood was generally jovial. I was actually fairly surprised at how well-run it was, given what must have been a very low budget. Kudos to festival promoter and organizer Mike Reed.

Hideout co-owner Tim Tutton introduced each band, and Thax Douglas provided 21 poems for the festivities, each with titles like "Thunderbirds Are Now! #2" and "Andrew Bird #4." By generally eschewing many of the other activities like the DJ tent, record fair and merch tables, I managed to hear and/or see almost every single band this weekend. I'll avoid making comments on every band for the sake of brevity, but here are some highlights and other notables:

DAY ONE
-Carl Newman, the redheaded frontman of AC Newman, started off his set with a guitar string completely out of tune. The band trudged through the "On the Table" and alerted him to the fact once it ended. Luckily, he managed to laugh it off, tune his guitar, and restart the show with an in-tune version of "On the Table." Andrew Bird later joined the band to whistle along with "Drink to Me Babe Then," guided by local alt-country singer Nora O'Connor, who provided back-up vocals and revealed herself to be quite pregnant.
-Four Tet's Kieren Hebden performed alone with two laptops and a mixing board, a set up that may have fared better in the DJ tent. Though he sounded great, there wasn't much to watch for 45 minutes. I later spotted him hanging out with friends during the Wrens and snapped a quick picture.
-The Go! Team was a treat, with singer/rapper Ninja keeping the crowd involved in their brand of 1970's action television show theme song music (Ladies say "Go," men say "Team!" "Go!" "Team!" "Go!" "Team!"). She eventually brought up a dozen or so neighborhood kids who had clearly just come from the park's public pool to dance along, which was adorable and hilarious.

DAY TWO
-Frenchkiss Records got the most love from the festival this weekend, with their three signature bands all featured on Sunday's lineup- Thunderbirds Are Now!, The Hold Steady, and Les Savy Fav. They were also three of the best sets of the weekend. TAN! showcased an incredible amount of energy on stage and a variety of circus tricks with their tambourines, and Les Savy Fav's Tim Harrington joined them on stage for a raucous finale. Meanwhile, the Hold Steady are one of my favorite bands of the moment, and singer Craig Finn showed a ton of personality to go along with his very unique voice and style of singing. And of course, what more can be said about Les Savy Fav. Tim Harrington is certifiably insane, and LSF puts on a serious show. He fashioned himself a hat out of tin foil, got the entire crowd to sit down together, threw a blow-up raft into the crowd, and poured a variety of substances over himself. They also played one of my favorite LSF songs, "Adoptduction," a story of a man kidnapped by "a dude with a moustache and a chick with an eyepatch." Classic.
-The Decemberists closed the event with a set list that spanned all three of their studio albums. Singer Colin Meloy also managed to get the crowd to sit down for him, and at one point during "The Infanta" the wind was blowing so hard at the band it seemed like they were fighting to get through the song, an effect that strangely added perfectly to their pirate-rock sound.

Check out the photoblog for a visual review of the festival and more specific commentary on the bands I was able to see. For $22 this weekend's festivities were a steal, and I hope the organizers will learn from the weekend's minor faults and make Intonation an annual event.
