MIAMI -- Pirates firing rocket-propelled grenades and automatic weapons tried to hijack a U.S.-owned cruise ship yesterday off the East African coast, but the vessel carrying many American passengers escaped, its owners said.
Two boats full of pirates approached the Seabourn Spirit about 100 miles off the Somali coast and opened fire, while the heavily armed bandits tried to get onboard, said Bruce Good, spokesman for the Miami-based Seabourn Cruise Line, a subsidiary of Carnival Corp.

Rob Mazurek returns as São Paulo Underground

Why the name change? Well, these days Mazurek resides in Brazil and he's been working on a new jazz combo there with local musicians Maurício Takara (drums) and Guilherme Granado (vocals, samples). In town this past weekend as a part of the MCA's Tropicália exhibition, the São Paulo Underground will also be performing tomorrow night for a special "Empty Bottle presents" live show at Sonotheque. Doors open at 10, admission is $10, must be 21+ to enter. Takara and Granado will open with DJ sets.

Alright, so just when the 5 or 6 of you out there are about to finally give up on me, I realize I had this web page that I used to update rather frequently. While the last month hasn't contained a huge amount of drama, there are a couple of things to make note of...

I, and 3 others who attended FATLV #1 back in July, have decided to go in together and rent a house in Las Vegas. While the exact time is not certain, we have targeted somewhere between Nov. 1 and Jan. 1 to make it happen. It's actually pretty surprising that we have found VERY nice 4 bedroom homes in excess of 3,000 sqft, for as little as $1400/month. A large number of these homes are only 1 or 2 years old as well. Once the rent is divided by the 4 of us, $350-$400 is pretty damn reasonable I think to live in Vegas if you want to be there.

I haven't been doing much construction work lately, as the guy I work for has had to stay home and look after both of his parents due to illness and surgery. It had really begun to concern me financially, because I was starting to have to use more and more of my poker bankroll to cover my bills.

Today though, I got an interesting phone call. It was the TZP site owner out in Las Vegas, and apparently the newsletter I've been putting together over the past 7 weeks has went over well with the upper management for the Doyle Brunson Poker Network. He forwarded it to the other managers of various poker sites under the network with a compliment to TZP and "this is how to get ahead in the business". Pretty cool stuff...

The result of my bit of praise...A probable earlier move to Vegas. The site manager is going to help me as much as possible to clear the rest of my expenses out of the way before I leave Virginia, and has invited me to stay with them at their home until the other 3 guys are able to get their affairs in order so that they can make the move. For me, it seems like a no-brainer. I really feel that Las Vegas is where I want to be, and I have an enormous amount of motivation to contribute to Tilt Zero Poker and to help the site and community grow.

So, that being said, it's only a matter of packing some boxes, and choosing the best way to get out there. After comparing the cost of driving/staying in hotels and just flying out and shipping a few boxes UPS, I've decided to sell the car and fly. Most of my work will be done for the site anyway, and what I don't do from home, I'll do with the folks I'm going to be working with and will just tag along with them.

As infrequently as I've updated this page lately, who knows...The next time I sit down to jot a little more about my life, it may very well be from Sin City. Wish me well...

Live Review: The Go! Team @ Metro 10/29/05

So, I thought the thing with Brits was that they like to lounge on sofas, wearing black clothing and an overall despondent demeanor that prohibits them from moving; they like drinks straight up and chain smoking and complaining about all that is beneath them, which is everything, which means that they will never, ever, write happy pop tunes about not being defeated, and about everyone being a V.I.P., and they will never, ever, wear little black skirts and fluorescent orange tops and fuzzy pink antennas while jumping around a stage, singing about rocking the microphone. And never. Never ever. Never will they giggle.

This wasn’t just a Halloween performance. This wasn’t a British band in disguise. This is how The Go! Team always is. On my way to the show I knew that I wasn’t going to be able to sit back and listen. M.C. Ninja made it her job to get everyone moving, everyone participating. Whether it was chit chatting with the crowd in that hyper British accent everyone at the Metro Saturday night was too drunk to understand, or trying to conduct a massive crowd cheer, she was not satisfied with solely owning the spotlight.

It was a whirlwind of a show, clocking in about an hour with the gang running through several tracks off its album Thunder, Lightning, Strike, and also trying out some new tunes. It’s odd that a band so eclectic in nature-mixing guitars and electronics and sampling and brass orchestrations and an ever changing soundtrack-could at the same time be a band absolutely meant to be seen live. Ian Parton is the mastermind behind this outfit and easy to miss onstage; he was everywhere and nowhere at once, humbly moving among instruments, keeping the flow going while Ninja upfront worked the crowd.

They played to the backdrop of pop art screen projection, a tactic I don’t think I’ve ever before seen utilized at the Metro. During surging pop rockers like “We Just Won’t Be Defeated” the stage was alive with all the members of the team coming together in frantic euphoria. For the soft and sweet “Hold Yr Terror Close” it cleared, leaving drummer Chi Fukami Taylor alone to lead us in a jaunty sway. The group returned for “Huddle Formation,” and with characteristic animation Ninja divided the crowd in half for a group cheer. I was on the “Team! Team-team! Team!” side. And yes, I took my duty seriously and actually shouted aloud. So did everyone. Perhaps Ninja appeals to the wounded inner cheerleader in all of us.

So maybe the Brits have moved on without we yanks realizing it. Maybe we’re behind in the times so that now it’s our music that’s drab and mechanized and pretentious. But I like to think that it’s not as simple as that, and that The Go! Team is really something special. The idea of this band is kind of annoying, and if you let them, they’ll sound like some hip hop entrepreneur trying to mix the Spice Girls and make it kitschy cool. But that’s not the ultimate effect of Parton and company. Recorded there’s sophisticated layering of dance beats and rockin’ hooks and catchy phrases and bluesy harmonica that sounds not contrived but spontaneous. On stage there’s a reigning of this impulsive sound so that anything that, for a lesser live act, could be messy and strident and just plain irritating, is actually a pleasure to listen to. And to dance to. Don’t forget the dancing.

I'm Still Alive...

Well, I wanted life in the fast lane and I'm starting to get a small taste of it. Managing a poker site newsletter takes quite a bit of time and communication with others, but I (and more importantly, our users) are pleased with the results so far. We've decided to make it a weekly newsletter, and are trying to keep it short and sweet, with maybe 1 or 2 specialized articles/interviews, and a tournament series update each issue.

Things seem to be going very well in Vegas now that homebase has been set up there. With a little luck and a LOT of hard work, it looks like I will making the cross country drive for our November trip, and just moving my things out there for good when I go. On our trip last month, I and another Chris noticed Gavin Griffin (2004 WSOP 3K PL Holdem Champ) playing at the 40/80 tables at the Wynn. We approached him and spoke very briefly of TZP, dropped him a card, and asked that he give us a call if he was interested. Well...he was! After spending some time with John in Vegas, he's decided to support TZP and wear our gear in upcoming tournaments, so that will be some great advertising for us. We are also having success with the staff at Top Pair Magazine as they're providing us with a couple of freerolls each month, and also looking to do a TZP article as soon as the October issue.

All in all, I'm staying incredibly busy, but with each day it's looking more and more like I'm getting closer to making a "dream job" happen for myself. I mean, if you love poker, what's better than being a Marketing Director for an OPR, living in Vegas promoting your site, and playing the game you love on the side??

What a whirlwind week the past one has been. The Las Vegas trip has proved to be more than just a "fun" experience for me. I've been granted the chance to act as the Marketing guru for Tilt Zero Poker, and I'm THRILLED to have a shot at it. I've spent the better part of the past 3 days trying to build what will hopefully be known as one of the best OPR newsletters around. We are looking to send issue #1 out tonight, and if the response is good, we'll just make some minor tweaks here and there, but have a whole new offering for the TZP community.

As far as any of you that may be interested in the newsletter, I've provided a sign up box on the right hand side of this page so that you can receive it if you wish to do so. Much to my mild surprise, I recently learned that the 5th of November was celebrated in the US, mostly in New England, into the early 19th century. But, instead of carrying a mannequin of Fawkes to the flames, it was a likeness of the Pope that was paraded through the streets, which is apparently what was done in England in the early days of the holiday.

Live Review: Broken Social Scene @ Metro 10/28/05

I almost had my eyeglass repair toolkit confiscated at the door. But the head security lady stopped my accoster, saying, “This is a mellow show tonight. We’re letting almost everything in.” Mellow? Ha! I honestly don’t know what stopped me from taking that skinny, inch-long screwdriver and stabbing it into the temple of the guy standing next to me--such was my frenzy, so much was my compulsive energy driven by this show.

All right. That’s a lie. The last thing Broken Social Scene makes you want to do is assault people. Last Friday at the Metro it was more about delivering cross-country dedications from sweethearts, more about “Raise your hand if you’re in love.” Lest you groan I’ll attest that this is the one band in your lifetime that can pull off these sugary shenanigans. This isn’t a didactic group crusading for world peace. This isn’t a gang of politicians pretending to be musicians or a gang of musicians pretending to be politicians. It’s just a good ol’ fashioned rock band that isn’t afraid to be passionate. And optimistic. By god, they’re downright cheery.

The entire show was like a weekend party where friends come and go as they please, picking up an instrument on a whim and contributing for a few songs, disappearing for a while and then coming back again. If a person didn’t leave the stage he stood off to the side, saluting those playing with a raised bottle of beer, or else admiring with awe and applause.

The glorious cycle of band feeding off crowd energy and crowd feeding off band energy is what animated this show. This was Broken Social Scene’s first time playing the Metro, and the guys revealed that the event was a dream come true for them, as they knew about the club’s legendary reputation. The crowd did not disappoint, and the band’s excitement was hard to miss. This was definitely the liveliest show I’ve seen in this mopey town. At any given time there were eight or more people on stage jumping, swaying, skipping, dancing, running across the stage to play eight bars on a trumpet, then running back again to pick up a guitar.

The set lasted around two hours and the sound was solid all the way through. On tunes like “KC Accidental” and “Superconnected” the band created a luscious chaotic mass of beauty that sent the kids spastic. On the mantric “Anthems for a Seventeen Year Old Girl” singer Lisa Lobslinger, taking over for the absent Emily Haines, mellowed them with her wispy voice and baby doll demeanor. For the last half of the set Leslie Feist joined the fun and on “Almost Crimes” rocked the drums and air guitar when she wasn’t singing counterpart to a behoodied Kevin Drew, who may have been battling an illness but still sounded strong.

Broken Social Scene has restored my faith in the Metro. Anymore I hate going to shows in Wrigleyville because the band always turns out to be bigger than I realized, the crowd further removed and lazy, simply there because it’s the Metro and whoever’s playing there must be cool because the Metro is cool. On any given night it seems like half the crowd knows one song or less by the band, and it’s not due to the artists’ newness or obscurity. It’s because the Metro seems to no longer be about getting fucked by music but about trying to fuck the cute little girls in spaghetti straps or the handsome buff boys in baseball caps.

But last Friday there was an energy I haven’t experienced at the Metro in years. Broken Social Scene has only been around a few years but has already procured a loyal mass of fans whose good vibes rival any Phish cult. It was refreshing to hear for a change collective voices singing along and not an incessant, messy clatter of hundreds of apathetic conversations. Whether or not you love a band, if the group around you is going insane with passion for the music it makes the show a gazillion times better. If this passion is merited, well, then you have the epitome of live shows. I think that with Broken Social Scene, indie rock finally has a live act worthy of a devoted following of tripped-out, obsessive nomads.

The Last Day In Vegas...

"Alright alright...I just talked with Melissa and Kaiser just got off the plane and is heading home. In the meantime though, I was with him on Sunday night and will try to reconstruct the events leading up to my drunkened blackout after I declared Sunday my Margarita Madness day!

(Beware - this could be lengthy, and estimated drink counts will be shown)

We had spent the afternoon cruising through Aladdin and stopping by Imperial Palace for a little bit of 1/2 NL and decided to head back to send Greenie off as his flight was sometime around 6-7pm. (Margaritas = 3, Coronas = 3)

After Melissa went to take Green to the airport, Kaiser and I grabbed quick showers and decided to head downtown for a bit, as neither of us had seen Binion's and the like before. 8PM or so with margarita in hand, we hopped in a cab and were on our way. As we were dropped off downtown, the first Fremont show of the night was starting, and we each grabbed a beer as the lights went down. (Margaritas = 4, Coronas = 4)

The show was pretty cool and we decided to take a stroll through Binion's to check out the poker room and the WSOP wall of fame. Man, talk about feeling like standing on sacred ground, it was truly surreal. We head back outside, and I spot the Blue Light Special of margaritas, only $4 a pop! Of course I grab one, Kaiser reloads his beer and we head into Fitzgeralds, where they were advertising the "Best Video Poker Payouts in Vegas". We each pop $20 into a machine, and before we know it, I'm up to $80, and he's up to $60. We decide to quit there and move on to something else. I needed another marg anyway, so I hit the $4 stand again and we decide to take a cab back to Treasure Island for some table games and to check out Kahunaville (the bar where I had entirely too much fun last year). (Margaritas = 6, Coronas = 4)

We hit TI around 10:30 or so and Kaiser hits the Craps table, and I go in search for the next marg. I find one for a staggering $8.50 now (we shoulda stayed at Fremont!), leave the bartender the full $10 and watch the craps action for a while. Kaiser starts slow, then hits a bit of a rush, up perhaps $140 or so, then decides to quit after a big odds bet misses, and we walk away from the table with Kaiser holding on to about a $40 profit. (Margaritas = 7, Coronas = 4)

Kahunaville - They had Dueling Pianos going on at the start of the evening as we walked into a very crowded atmosphere. We table hop maybe 3 times and finally work our way up towards the stage when a group of 4 hotties from Long Island land at the table beside us. (Talk about pot odds!) Kaiser is starting to enjoy the beer a bit more now, and I'm dangerously close to the point of no return as I've already had 2 more margs since we walked in. (Margaritas = 9, Coronas = 4)

The point where things start getting fuzzy - I seem to recall Kaiser saying something to the effect of "You NEED to SLOW DOWN!", and of course I come back with the ever popular "I'M FIIIIIIIIIINE". So he does what any normal person would, heads up to the bar for shooters! He comes back as the waitress has just dropped off our refills and to my despair he's holding Jager Bombs! Now I am not a fan of Jager in the least, but I suck it up and down it in 3 pussified swallows. Apparently that's all the liquid courage I needed, b/c as he returns from the bathroom, I'm now settled in with the 4 hotties from Long Island. (Margaritas = 10, Coronas = 4, Jager Bombs = 1)

The part where Kaiser will likely have to take over this story - I'm not really sure what happened in any sequential order after that, I know we bought the hotties a round of shots and drinks (with one each for ourselves of course). I know that some guys that had traveled with the hotties showed up and turned out to be pretty cool. I know I had at least one more marg before all was said and done. (Margaritas = 11, Coronas = 4, Jager Bombs = 1, Random Shot of Something = 1)

Blackout! - Let me first say, I'm really not proud of this, but feel I'll go ahead and put it out there for all to read, just for the humor in it. At some point after the guys showed up, I started getting REALLY REALLY sleepy and made my plea for us to go. The fact that I couldn't walk made it a bit more difficult, but Kaiser and I started to make our way back through the casino to go find a cab. One of the guys from the bar came out and told Kaiser that they had the penthouse and we were more than welcome to come up, as they had way many more girls than guys up there. Obviously Kaiser really wanted to go, but there was one problem...I was passed out on a video poker machine.

The last thing I remember is him trying to get me up off of the machine and the next thing I know is it's 10:45AM back in the hotel room and I wake up to Kaiser saying "SHIT! SHIT!" He overslept and we had to bust ass to try and make it to the airport for his 11:40AM flight.

We made it to the airport...AT 11:30AM. There was no way he was going to make it, and after checking with NWA, they told him he'd have to wait till this morning for a standby flight. Melissa and Monster came to pick him up, I said my goodbyes and spent a still drunk-ish/hungover 3 hours drinking all the water I could find while waiting for my 2:30 flight out of town.

From what I recall, Kaiser has a great continuation of this story, as he headed to Bellagio for some late night poker after dropping me off at the room. Hopefully we'll get to hear it, and sorry if any of you think this post is too long. There is just no way to properly describe what happened out there, but I thought this would be a close attempt at it. Hope you found it funny also, I sure as hell did!"

French Riots, Or, It's The Economy, Stupid

Source: The following is a portion of a letter sent by a writer living in Paris to Glenn Reynolds of Instapundit. What the writer says rings true to me: the Parisian riots don't seem to be Islamist-inspired, but are more of a function of France's lousy economic policies:

There's just no damn jobs. White college grads can't get jobs, what hope do immigrants from regions with bad schools have? I think this is more like the LA Rodney King riots -- there's people there who want the French dream, just as in LA people wanted the American dream, but they just don't see it when they look around, and they resent the fact enormously. They can't change schools to get a better education because the government says you have to go to the school where you live, and they live where they do because of the zoning laws... which I'm no expert about, but I do know that the government owns 30 percent of all housing in France, and poor immigrants basically live where they're told. The government tries to give them everything and does it extremely badly, there's no upward mobility, and it doesn't breed a happy community. Religion exacerbates the feeling of exclusion, I'm sure, but the rioting seems mostly driven by economics and bad social policy.

This doesn't mean that the situation can't radicalize, nor that Wahhabi imams won't try to take advantage of this, but it seems to me France is reaping the bitter fruit of 50 years of statist economics. It doesn't justify violence, but I think it helps give a better perspective on events.

Adding To The RPG Collection

Source: For a while now, I've been looking for a good game to introduce new players to roleplaying, something fast-playing and easy to learn, yet with a range of options. For a long time, my game of choice was the D&D; Cyclopedia, the compilation of the old Basic to Immortal series. Though not my favorite RPG, it was fun and fit the bill. Trouble is, I only have one copy, and used copies are harder and harder to find easily. (Of course, I haven't looked in a while, and PDFs don't count.)

For a while I used Big Eyes, Small Mouth, but the need to either pre-generate characters or take newbies through even a relatively simple point-build system was more than I wanted to deal with. Plus, the company's troubles don't leave me much hope for its future availability.

Enter Troll Lord Games' Castles and Crusades. From what I've heard from mind_of_richard and pwca, it sounds as if C&C; stands in the same relationship to D&D; 3.5 that the old "Basic D&D;" that culminated in the Cyclopedia had with AD&D; 1E and 2E: a simpler, "pick up and play" version. I don't know much more about the game, though most of the reviews seem favorable. And, of course, it's in print and easily available. It's a little disheartening to me, however, that it has at least four pages of errata; Troll Lord has, in my mind, a terrible reputation for poor proofreading.

However, I ordered the C&C; Player's Handbook and Monsters and Treasures book. I doubt I'll need any setting or adventure supplements -- I still have my collection of old D&D; modules, bought when they were new! And, so I've heard, conversion is easy.

Fingers crossed that I'm not soon pulling my hair out over lose/loose or its/it's errors.

DJ Who??

I didn't stick around long enough at Sonotheque last Thursday for the Biz Markie performance, but I did discover this great DJ who was the opener. He goes by "DJ Mel" and is apparently the hip-hop buyer for Waterloo Records in Austin, TX, which is an amazing store on par with the Amoeba stores in California.

I wasn't able to find much else about DJ Mel and he seems to be a relative unknown outside of Texas...but damn, this Lone Star can spin! After a solid 20 minutes of cutting some of the best new hip-hop jams, he started dropping in some sick 80s samples. He mashed-up Men Without Hats with 50 cent, Ying Yang Twins with Janet Jackson and even dug deep in the crates to scratch up some Nu Shooz. Yes, that's right, I said Nu Shooz...the one-hit wonder band who struck synth-pop/dance gold with "I Can't Wait." DJ Mel even managed to make Hall & Oates sound cool. I was at the bar ordering a drink when he played "I Can't Go For That," and everyone around me went crazy.

I'm sure Biz was great as well, but what Mel put together was an ideal set for me. Mostly new, mostly hip-hop but with a dash of 80's blended in to keep things unpredictable and interesting. It's a formula that I've always advocated, but Mel nailed it down as good as anyone I've heard.

Animal Collective - Feels (Fat Cat)
Amazon.com sez: Feels is the band's seventh album to date - their sophomore effort for Fat Cat - and sees them again kicking off from their previous release to explore another different direction. Where Sung Tongs was largely acoustic-based and the product of just two members of the Collective (Avey Tare and Panda), Feels is in contrast a full group effort (also including Geologist and Deakin). Moving further away from the suggestion of folkish affinities; it is electrified, rhythmically more urgent, and overall a considerable denser work.

Damn! It's already been 3 years since Geogaddi was released? I still crank up that record on a fairly regular basis like I just bought it a few months ago. ("1969" sill kicks my ass!) When you make albums as good as these guys, 3 years in-between records goes by quick.

John Cale - Black Acetate (Astralwerks)
New solo record from legendary producer and Velvet Underground alumnus. The Beeb sez: Like a cross-section of his whole career layered with the funkiest contemporary electronica, Black Acetate is, in turns, startling, edgy, doomy and filled with rock 'n' roll thrills that really do hark back to his best work on Island records (Sold Motel, Turn The Lights On)...
What's most amazing is the fact that both his voice and his muse seem to be in tip top form. As he says on ''Brotherman'': 'I've got reams of this shit.'

Depeche Mode - Playing the Angel (Mute)
Thanks to the help of producer Mark Bell (of LFO and Bjork fame), I thought Mode's 2001 Exciter release amazingly kept the band sounding fresh and musically relevant some 20 years into their career. Unfortunately Bell isn't back this time around and my initial thoughts are that this may be a step back for Depeche Mode... sort of like how The Cure unsuccessfully tried to recapture their Disintegration glory days with Bloodflowers. Even the cover art is derivative of vintage 80's Mode. That being said, I do really like the lead single, "Precious."

Splurging

Source: Recently I recovered a portion of the money owed me by a games publisher. After paying off a loan at my credit union, I decided it was time to splurge on something fun. (Sounds gross or kinky, depending on the point of view. --ed. Pervert.) At first, I was leaning toward a digital camera, but I decided I need to do a bit more research to find the one I'd be happy with.

So, instead, I bought this. I've long wanted a real dutch oven* for stews and braising, and Le Creuset's are considered a standard. Besides, the price was almost impossible to beat, and, now that it's autumn, it's a great time for pot roast and coq au vin.

It should arrive some time next week. Yum!

*(Yeah, so Le Creuset calls it a "French Oven." I'm still ticked at France, so it's a "dutch oven" to me. :P )

Lymph nodes harbor information on whether breast cancer will recur

Source: I've just finished watching "assignment four" of Sapphire and Steel, the adventure involving a creature that invades our reality through photographs -- all photos that have ever been taken. This was the best I've seen yet. A good, eerie story that would make for a great Chill or Call of Cthulhu adventure.

It's too bad this show was canceled -- it's so much better than the usual police or medical drama.

Live Review: Arcade Fire@The Riviera 9/28/05

Wednesday night at the Riviera Theatre, your voice would have been lost in the cacophonous chorus of all the other hoots and hollers from all the other gazillion people who love this band as much as you do. The Arcade Fire may be too big for indie rock's good. In a year they've gone from Arcade-sumunuh-who? to selling out the 2500-person capacity Riv. After openers Wolf Parade finished their set the dude behind me asked his friend, "Are you ready for The Fire, man?"

That’s right. They’re already "The Fire." They're selling thousands and thousands of CD's in every record store in North America. They've taken over Sigur Ros' spot as every celebrity's token favorite cool rock band. They're pun-tastically hot.

The Riv was wall-to-wall with a diverse crowd of folks that could have just as easily been waiting for Mclusky or Tori Amos. At five till nine The Arcade Fire picked up their guitars and violins and French horns and took the stage, opening with "Wake Up," a needless command as the mantric "ohs" from the audience all but smothered the band's own chorale. Their underground buzz manifested itself as an explosion of neurotic devotion as every gray-haired man and every pixie girl belted along every word of every song, and I could just picture them listening to Funeral every day for the past year, manically carving "purify the colors, purify my mind," into their flesh.

Vocalist Win Butler led the brigade through their set of popular tunes, throwing in Dylan and Bowie covers, and some gems from their (as obscure as any Arcade Fire product can still be) eponymous debut, including "I'm Sleeping in a Submarine" and "Headlights Look Like Diamonds." The guys and gals on stage threw in cheesy theatrics, like biting and mock fighting, and in weird moment of compulsion Richard Reed Parry was wrapped in the cords from his bandmate's neo-Revolutionary jacket. In between acts the gang was free to lounge in the onstage funeral parlor-esque sofas; however, the energy was so severe there was little need to do so.

The Arcade Fire capered through most of Funeral, an inevitable set as the band’s repertoire is still limited. Butler seemed apologetic for this lack of variety, musing that the they’ve been in Chicago four or five times, and they aren’t coming back again until they have "one million" new songs. Our laughter was tinged with fear because this band is so strong and bizarre, the promise doesn’t seem so far-fetched.

The group finished with the deceptively sweet "In the Backseat." Regine Chassagne’s voice, chilling and powerful, carried us to the song's apex; however, from there the end fizzled, with each member of the band seeming to stop at their own leisure, leaving me with the dissatisfaction of an anti-climax. I didn't know it was over until the house lights came up. In the confusion there was a dazed stumble for the exits, but soon the exodus came to a standstill. It took twenty minutes just to make it to the lobby, and I didn't understand why until I found out Thursday morning that I'd missed the real encore: the group decided to trek to the vestibule and do an impromptu acoustic jam session, a fitting touch from a band incapable of stopping their own awkward romp down the path of pop rock heroism.

The 200-Year Jihad

On my travels for the past few days, I have been reading a book which tells the story of a quite astonishing part of British history of which I was previously unaware. In 'White Gold', Giles Milton records the appalling details -- gleaned,it appears, from a wealth of historical documents including diaries and letters -- of a seaborne Islamic jihad against Britain which lasted for no less than two centuries.

From the early seventeenth to nineteenth centuries, thousands of British men women and children were kidnapped by Arab corsairs and sold into slavery in Morocco where they were kept in conditions of unspeakable barbarism. The astounding thing is that these British victims were not merely seized at sea where they ran the gauntlet of such pirates in places such as the Straits of Gibraltar. They were actually abducted from Britain itself.

Live Review: BRMC@Metro 9/20/05

alt="" border="0" /> To be honest, I have always been disappointed with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club's live performances. I've been a huge fan of the band since day one, but for some reason their live shows just never seemed up to par with their recorded work. The songs essentially sounded the same live, but something was missing. Not enough energy? A lack of stage presence? Not enough fuzz on the guitars?? I could never quite put my finger on it...

However, with a brand new album and a brand new sound, I was looking forward to giving BRMC another chance in winning me over with their live show. And, I'm quite happy to report, their headlining gig last week at Metro did exactly that.

Not surprisingly, BRMC started their set with all new material from Howl. Guitarist Peter Hayes came out first and performed two songs solo Bob Dylan-style with guitar and harmonica. Once the rest of the band came out, (bassist Robert Turner, drummer Nick Jago and an additional touring guitarist), they plowed through at least three or four additional songs from the new album with Hayes still leading the action on guitars and vocals. Fellow vocalist Turner seemed rather quiet throughout this first part of the set and I was beginning to wonder if Hayes
had taken over the reins of BRMC after all of the band's recent tribulations (botched record deal, Jago briefly left the band, etc.).

While it seems that Hayes is probably responsible for the more gospel-tinged tracks from the new record, I was a bit premature in thinking that Turner had taken a step back in his role as co-leader of BRMC. As much as Hayes seemed to dominate the first half the set, the rest of the night it was the Robert Turner show, with the bassist taking the lead on classics like "Spread Your Love" and "Red Eyes and Tears" as well as the rest of the tracks from Howl. As an alumnus of The Brian Jonestown Massacre and as someone who strikes more than a passing resemblance to Syd Barrett at times, I think I've always been a bit partial to Hayes in my fandom for the BRMC. However, I'd have to say that Turner is a much stronger vocalist live and, much to my surprise, is the one that is responsible for the vocals on my favorite track from the new record, "Sympathetic Noose."

I had another BRMC revelation once the band finally tore into some their older material. I thought the new songs were sounding great and overall thought the band had never sounded better. Then, "Love Burns" started and I remembered why I had been disappointed with them before. Still probably my favorite BRMC jam of all-time, it just didn't have that same exhilarating punch live (especially when the chorus kicks in) as it does when it's crankin' out of the Alpine. It was then that I had the epiphany...hello, it's the lack of overdubs!!

Part of what makes BRMC great is their liberal borrowing of My Bloody Valentine and the Jesus and Mary Chain's patented multi-layered fuzzed out guitar attack. With only one guitar and one bass on stage, the sound just isn't going to be the same. It seems like a few more fuzz pedals wired together could remedy this a bit, but they still probably need two guitarists plugged into amps that go '11' to truly recreate on stage that great sound they had on their debut record.

On Howl, of course, they don't have to worry about this problem, because it's a stark record that's almost entirely acoustic. It's much easier to replicate the sounds of this record on stage, and thus, I finally enjoyed BRMC in a live setting. Maybe it was a little residual enjoyment from hearing the new material, but (with the exception of "Love Burns") I thought they sounded a lot better on their older rockers as well. Overall, they just seemed a lot more loose and energetic than I remember them before. (like they almost enjoying themselves up there!?!) Perhaps they're getting better with age? Maybe they've come to terms with being performers in addition to being musicians? Or maybe they've been refreshed by new material, a new record label and a new direction for the band?? Whatever the case, I'm thrilled and hope this is an indication of things to come from BRMC.

The following are excerpts from an Iranian TV documentary, which aired on Sahar 1 TV on September 11, 2005.

Narrator: The initial reports talked about 6,729 fatalities. Soon, the number dropped to 3,000, and ultimately, somehow, it reached 2,800. After the incident, the Jerusalem Post published an article with the names of 4,000 Jews who had worked in the two towers and were missing. Later it turned out that only 130 Jews had been in the two towers and were killed. The absence of a large number of Jews on the day of the attack is one piece of evidence for the possibility that the Mossad was involved in the attacks. Handling disasters in the United States is viewed by all involved as a local response initially. Local governments will make it clear that it is their job to deal with local disasters; state governments will make it clear it is their disasters in their states. Even the Federal government look upon disasters as an initially a local problem in their planning, for this is what the governor’s had told them they want. Even in those situations where local government will become over whelmed, the basic assumption of planning is that local governments will be on their own form 12 to 48 hours.

The Federal Response Plan (FRP) provides the Federal Government its marching orders in response to a major disaster. The whole system is predicated upon local government acting first. If locals can’t handle it, they turn to their state government, and if the state is overwhelmed the state can ask the Feds for help. Not only is this how the plan was established, but state and local governments are very jealous of their role and don’t want the Feds doing anything till asked. Those really interested can go back and review events in Florida involving Andrew. (The evening before Andrew hit, the Duty Officer in US Army Forces Command in Atlanta called the Florida EOC and asked if they saw a need for help. The answer he got was, “no we can handle it.” That stood till the Miami response fell apart and a local official then started screaming for help.)

FEMA can only preposition so much but they can’t drive a thing until asked by the Governor of one of the several states. That is, unless, the President was to take the exceptional step of invoking the Insurrection Act in an area threatened by a disaster and taking over all control.

Initially the responsibility for initial response to Katrina belongs to New Orleans and Louisiana. They wanted it, as does almost every state in the Union. They only want the Feds to show up when called. Is it time to review these provisions of the FRP? Could be, but today it’s being run as per established protocols.

This does make sense if you look at it rationally. The local government is the one that knows the jurisdiction best. The population, it’s make up and needs, the lay of the land. Further, since the local government is the one with actual “eyes on” the event they should have the best information available as to the actual status and actual needs. That’s what drives the system. The guy at the lowest levels looks at the situation and says I need help doing “X.” He/she doesn’t need to know where that help is or what form it may take. He only needs to state a need. The State will attempt to fill it, if it can’t be filled by the State it will get passed to the Federal level.

I still maintain that, whatever the failures of the Fed in this situation, a rational analysis of the situation shows that the incompetent responses of the Blanco and Nagin administrations made the problem far worse than it had to have been.
